How to Beat Jet Lag

Don't let jet lag ever get in the way of your travels again! This guide will show you how to beat jet lag like a travel pro with 10 easy steps. The best part is you can do it all naturally without taking any pills, supplements, or sleep aids.

How to Beat Jet Lag

Anyone who has traveled around across multiple time zones knows that jet lag is a very. real. thing. Sometimes even traveling a seemingly short distance like from Chicago to LA (a 2-hour time difference) can cause your body to get all out of whack.

*Fun Fact: Flying EAST will actually increase the possibility of you feeling symptoms of jet lag!*

Jet lag is caused by a sudden change in your body's internal clock, aka your Circadian Rhythm. Symptoms of jet lag can include:

  • Disturbed sleep patterns
  • Poor physical performance/energy
  • Lack of concentration/mental energy
  • Change in appetite
  • Nausea
  • Indigestion or constipation
  • Headaches

Despite all these icky things that can happen, there are a few travel hacks and tips you can use to mitigate the possibility of jet lag and beat it all together! Try using some of these pro travel tips next time you're flying across time zones to beat the jet lag naturally and skip on having to take any pills or supplements.

Before Your Flight

1. Adjust Your Schedule

When you're traveling to a new time zone, try shifting your schedule at least a day or two in advance to start preparing. Adjust the time you go to bed and do some of your daily routines, change your watch to the new time zone, and even eat some of your meals on the new time zone. Doing this will help to decrease your body's shock of internal time change when you actually arrive to your destination.

2. Hit the Gym

Getting a good workout in before you embark on a long haul flight is a good way to get the blood circulating properly in your body and relax any tense muscles. If it fits into your schedule, hit the gym before you leave for a long flight so you can feel more relaxed and mobile. Don't forget to get a nice stretch in there too!

3. Eat the Right Things

Avoid eating foods that are too greasy, spicy, or heavy before your flights. When you sit on a plane for extended periods of time with these types of foods in your body, it can cause indigestion, stomach pains, and other gross things. Eat a nutritious meal before your flight, and try to skip the booze and coffee as caffeine and alcohol can severely dehydrate you at high altitudes.

4. Fly at Night

If it's possible (especially if you're traveling eastbound), book your flight to fly at night. This way, you can sort of trick your body into thinking that it's bedtime when you get on the plane. When you arrive to your destination, it will most likely be daytime, so you'll be rested and ready to go!

During Your Flight

5. Stay on Your Destination's Time

Once you get onto the plane, stay on the time schedule of your destination. If it's bedtime in your destination, try to get right to sleep. If it's daytime at your destination, do everything you can to stay awake. I did this on a 13-hour flight from Istanbul to Chicago once... Oh boy... I was big time STRUGGLING when I arrived at O'Hare, but I slept like a baby that night once I got back to my bed. Do everything you can to stay on your new time zone!

6. Move Around

Make sure you're moving around here and there during your flight. Get up and take a small walk around the cabin or get up to stretch every once in awhile. You can even do small stretches--like stretching your arms or rolling your ankles--in your seat without having to get up and do much movement. Just something to get the blood circulating again is better than nothing.

7. Keep Hydrated

Dehydration while flying is a huge contributor to increased jet lag. Make sure you're keeping hydrated by bringing a large water bottle with you to the airport and filling it up before you go. Always take advantage of the flight attendants providing water when they come around. Try your best to avoid caffeine and alcohol when you're flying too since that causes extreme dehydration in high altitudes.

Once You Arrive

8. Hit the Ground Running

Literally and figuratively... I know how appealing it sounds to take a nap once you arrive to your destination, but do everything you can to stay active if it's daytime. Hit the hotel gym and get a nice sweat going (it's great for circulation and getting your muscles back to normal), rehydrate by drinking lots of water, and spend as much time in natural light as possible. Sometimes the excitement of being in a new destination is enough to give me the energy to stay up and about. Whatever you choose to do, just make sure you keep at it and keep moving!

9. Eat a High Protein Breakfast

If it's morning at your destination, eat a high protein breakfast as soon as you arrive to help prevent drowsiness and keep you alert. Eating lots of protein will replenish your body with the fuel it needs to get going for the rest of the day. The healthier the better!

10. Eliminate Distractions at Bedtime

When it comes time for bed, put away your cell phone and turn off the TV at least an hour before you hit the hay. The lights from the screens will disrupt your sleep cycle, which is the last thing you want when you're trying to adjust to the new time zone. You need to let your mind and body decompress before it's time to sleep.

How to Spend Your Time in Chicago During the Summer

There's nothing quite like summertime in Chicago. The Riverwalk, fireworks above the lake, rooftops and patios, and festivals galore! If you're planning a trip to the Windy City during the summer months, check out this travel guide on things to do in Chicago while you're visiting! You definitely don't want to miss out on this summer destination.

How to Spend Your Time in Chicago During the Summer: 10 Things to Do in Chicago

Now that summer is in full swing, travel season is too. Have you planned out which exciting city you're heading to next? New York, Paris, London, Los Angeles... All great cities. But they have nothing on CHICAGO in the summer.

Ask anyone who has been to or lives in Chicago during the summer and they'll tell you that all those cold winter months are worth living through solely because of the summer. Now I might be a littttlee biased, but I'm tell you--something about this city totally comes alive in the summer! It's like all of those months in hibernation puts us into action from late spring through early fall.

From rooftop bars to street festivals, the Riverwalk to Millennium Park, there are endless things to find, do, and eat here. If you're planning a trip to the Windy City during the summer, check out these tips on things to do in Chicago during your visit! Think of this as your "Chitown Summer Bucket List"!

1. Stroll down the Chicago Riverwalk

The city of Chicago recently invested a pretty penny into designing an amazing waterfront pedestrian walkway that is located on the south bank of the Chicago River. Visitors can come and enjoy a walk down by the river and stop in at the local wineries, restaurants, boat rental shops, bike rental stations, and more. You're right in the heart of downtown, which is wonderful to experience on a sunny day.

2. Head to Millennium Park for Free Activities

Millennium Park is sometimes scoffed off by locals as a tourist trap; but not in the summer! In the summer, Millennium Park has so much to offer visitors of all ages. There are free yoga and dance classes, free movies screenings, free concerts, free festivals, and more! What's better than free activities in the city?! For a full list of their activities from May through September, click right here

3. Visit Lincoln Park, the Zoo, and the Conservatory (all for free)

One of the city's best kept gems lies just north of the city center. The neighborhood of Lincoln Park is a must see when visiting Chicago (and it's where I call home!). Walk through the gorgeous park, visit the city's Lincoln Park Zoo, explore the Lincoln Park Conservatory, or relax by the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool--all for free. It's a serene escape from the city without even having to leave the city. Try walking around the neighborhood if you have some time as well. It's very family friendly and full of boutiques, bars, and restaurants!

4. Shop the Farmer's Markets

There's something so nostalgic about a farmer's market in the summertime... Don't you agree? Chicago offers plenty of opportunities for farmers markets all around the city during the summer on various days of the week. You're guaranteed to get the extremely fresh food, beautiful flowers, and a lively atmosphere. There are even local restaurants that offer pop-ups at the markets from time to time! Check out the farmer's market schedule right here.

5. Attend a Festival

"Chicago" and "Festivals" are basically synonymous in the summer months. You can find a festival or event going on almost every single day in the summer--especially on the weekends. Attend fun events like Lollapalooza, Jazz Fest, Chicago Pride, West Fest, Taste of Chicago (or Randolph, River North, etc.), Art Fest, and even Hot Dog Fest. There are tons of different food, music, drink, or art related festivals going on throughout the summer, so make sure you don't miss out! Check out a full schedule here

6. Spend a Day On the River

If you're keen on spending the entire day by the water downtown, check out some of the other activities to do besides just the Riverwalk. You can go kayaking in the river, rent a boat or pontoon to cruise along the river, or you can take the uber-popular Chicago Architecture Tour. You basically get to spend the afternoon in a boat cruising around the downtown Chicago area while learning about the city around you. There are a few different companies that offer a Chicago River tour and, from what I hear, you really can't go wrong with any of them. Jay and I did one that was sponsored by the Chicago History Museum and it included a wonderful tour plus free drinks and snacks. I highly recommend it!

7. Drink at a Rooftop Bar and Eat on a Restaurant Patio

Ok, so I get that for those of you who live in warm climates you're probably thinking this one is silly; but in Chicago, rooftops and patios are a way of life in the summer. Like I said earlier, we're in hibernation mode during most of the year, so the minute it warms up--we are outside!

Most restaurants and bars will start to open up their patio areas as soon as it hits decent temperatures (sometimes 50 degrees will do it), so take advantage of those when you can! See my list of places to eat in Chicago right here.

As for the best rooftops, check out some of these: J. Parker, Soho House, NoMI Garden, Cindy's, GreenRiver, Streeterville Social, or Rock Bottom. You can also browse the popular lists on Thrillist, Timeout, or Chicago Mag for more suggestions!

8. Spend the Day at the Beach

A lot of people look at me crazy when I say they should spend a day on the beach in Chicago, but it's a real thing that people do here! Thanks to Lake Michigan, Chicago's lakefront offers a nice stretch of "beachfront" property for visitors and locals to enjoy. You can party hard with the young crowd down by Oak Street Beach or North Avenue Beach (not my scene at all), or head a little further north towards Fullerton Beach or Montrose Beach to have a more quiet and relaxing experience. I personally love doing the latter with a little picnic in tow. Either way, I recommend you walk along the lakefront to take in the incredible views of the city and enjoy the lively atmosphere.

9. See a Show

Chicago is an artistic hub for fascinating shows and brilliant performances. When visiting the city, you should definitely try to nab some tickets to see a Broadway play, a theatre performance, a dance performance, a comedy show, or a musical! The options are endless here and you shouldn't miss out.

My personal favorites are the dance performances put on by Giordano Dance Chicago, which is America's original jazz company. First of all, I love that the roots of jazz dance are here in Chicago and that this company has been thriving for over 50 years. Second, having grown up as a dancer myself, it's so inspiring to see the these incredibly talented professionals perform such moving pieces time and time again. I'm always so thrilled to see the new and innovative performances that their company comes up with! They typically have performances towards the beginning and end of summer (as well as throughout the rest of the year), and you can see their full schedule right here!

10. Explore the Neighborhoods

The Windy City is a neighborhood city, which means it's comprised of a ton of different areas and neighborhoods that all have their own unique personalities and vibes. The best part about being in Chicago when it's warm out is that you can actually enjoy the feeling of walking around and exploring the neighborhoods! Hop on a the L, take a bus, rent a bike, or get in a cab and head to a neighborhood that you want to see and explore it for a day. My personal favorites are Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wicker Park, West Loop, and River North, but everyone has their preferences. You can check out more info on neighborhoods in my Chicago City Guide.

Also try:

  • Renting a Divvy bike and ride around town

  • Catching a baseball game with the Cubs or White Sox

  • Heading to Navy Pier to ride the new ferris wheel, or seeing the fireworks on Wednesdays and Saturdays

  • Exploring our world renowned museums, like the Art Institute or Shedd Aquarium

  • Renting a boat and venture out to Lake Michigan or tie-up to other boats in the "Play Pen"

_____

This list is just barely scratching the surface on all the incredible things there are to do here during the summer. Comment below with more activities that you love in Chicago!

15 Free Blogging Tools Every Blogger Should Use

Just because you have a blog doesn't mean you need to spend a ton of money to make it successful. Here are 15 FREE resources that every blogger should be using that won't break the bank. From scheduling tools, to webinar platforms, to graphic design resources, we've got you covered!

15 Free Blogging Tools Every Blogger Should Use

One of the best things about blogging is that there are zero barrier to entry. If you want to be a blogger, you can buy a domain right now and get a website up and running in less than 24 hours if you wanted to.

But what about after you create the website? There's a lot of hidden expenses that people don't tell you about when you start--i.e. networking events, email systems, e-courses, designers, etc. It can really start to add up!

Luckily, there are still tons of great, free tools out there that bloggers and creatives can take advantage of so they aren't breaking the bank! I'm all about saving money and I've done some work to find the best blogging resources that won't cost me a penny. Here are 15 of my favorite FREE blogging tools that you should start using today if you aren't already.

1. Canva

I really don't know how I've lived my life without Canva. Canva is a free graphic design tool that allows you to create beautiful images and designs all on their web-based platform. You can drag and drop images, add text overlays, create presentations, produce infographics... Ugh! There is so much you can do with Canva. I know absolutely NOTHING about graphic design, but Canva makes it look like I do. They even have templates with set dimensions for different types of graphics, or you can customize your own!

If you take away 1 blogging tool from this list, let it be Canva.

2. QuickTime Player

For those of you who need to make a simple video, a screen flow, or record something from your mobile device, look no further than QuickTime Player. QuickTime Player is a free tool that's already included on Mac computers, and is easy to download on other PCs or computers. It's really easy to use and the quality of the image is great.

I actually created my entire Instagram E-Course using QuickTime Player because I didn't want to have to pay the money for other programs that did screen flows (aka a video of what is happening on your computer screen). It was super easy and efficient and I recommend this free tool for anyone who needs to do those types of videos. *You can even plug your mobile device in and record a screen flow from there!

3. Gmail

In case you've been living under a rock, Gmail is a wonderful email system to use for people of all ages. While I do believe that you should eventually get an email address with your proper domain (yourname@yourwebsite.com), there is absolutely nothing wrong with starting out with a regular yourwebsite@gmail.com email address. You can set it up in seconds and it's very user friendly.

Once you start to get more serious with your blog, you can upgrade to the 'Gmail for Work' suite of products, which is just a small monthly fee. I actually still use both addresses.

4. Google Drive, Docs, Calendar, etc.

Along with your Gmail account, you will get access to the entire Google Suite of products:  Google Drive, Docs, Calendar, etc. All of these tools are super useful when it comes to your blogging business. Google Drive is awesome because it allows you to easily store, share, and upload information, pictures, documents, or downloads; Google Drive makes it easy to create and share Word Documents on their web-based platform; and Google Calendar can integrate seamlessly with your smartphone so you can always keep up to date. Definitely take advantage of these products with your account!

5. License-Free Stock Photo Websites

For those of you who didn't necessarily come from a background in media, it might be worth noting that taking images straight off the internet can lead to pretty serious repercussions if not done carefully. Laws these days are pretty strict when it comes to intellectual property and it would be really sucky to find yourself in a situation where you're faced with a lawsuit because you grabbed a picture that someone else owned.

To avoid this issue, use license-free photos from websites like:

When you're browsing these sites, most of them don't require any sort of attribution...but it's always good to double check! Usually photos from Flickr require a small attribution, so always read up on the details.

6. Google Hangouts On Air

Bloggers hosting webinars is a big thing right now. When I first began hosting my webinar on Instagram, I spent hours trying to find the right webinar platform to use. I kept seeing a ton of different platforms that were familiar, but they were all so expensive! Since it was my first time, I didn't want to dish out the money and invest in something that I wasn't sure I was going to do again.

Luckily, I stumbled upon a blog post about webinars that said Google Hangouts On Air was a great FREE alternative to use. Plus, it's already included in your Gmail package! It was super easy to use once I messed around with it for a little bit. You can share your screen, share a live link with your audience, embed it into your website, and even send a replay of your webinar afterwards since the broadcast automatically records ands saves to YouTube. It's a wonderful alternative for people who want to do webinars while saving a little money.

7. Skype

If you don't have a Skype account right now, go sign up. Skype is a great way to be able to connect with people worldwide at any time. I've had job interviews, stayed in touch with friends, and even helped some of my blogging students via meetings on Skype. It's a great communication tool to have as a blogger--especially if you're a digital nomad or frequent traveler.

8. Hootsuite or Buffer

If you want to add a little more time into your week, or you just hate constantly updating your social media, consider using a social media scheduling tool like Hootsuite or Buffer. You can connect your social accounts to their platform and schedule out your social media for days in advance. Both platforms offer free options, but there are also paid options if you have multiple accounts to juggle around (good for Virtual Assistants or Social Media Managers).

9. Google Analytics

Any blogger who is serious about their blog should have a Google Analytics account. It's the industry standard to report your blog's statistics, demographics, and analytics. It doesn't take too long to set up and is really important to know if you want to get partnerships of any sort down the road.

10. Google Keyword Planner

SEO has become quite the buzz word with bloggers in recent years. Maybe you're wondering, "What's a good way to improve SEO?" Plan ahead! Google Keyword Planner is an awesome free tool that's included with your Google account and it allows you to see what words are receiving great traction on the internet.

For instance, if you're going to write a blog post about healthy desserts, you can use the keyword planner to figure out what your best combination of keywords should be according to Google's stats. When you go to write your post, you can try to strategically include those keywords throughout your post as best as possible for good results. Voila--your blog post is now more SEO friendly!

11. Dropbox

Another alternative to Google Drive is Dropbox, which is a great way to share and transfer files with other people. Their initial plan is free, but you can upgrade your storage plan for a small monthly fee if you need to.

12. Evernote

For those of you who'd like to have a place where you can take notes and keep track of your projects, check out Evernote as an option. While I personally prefer the old fashioned way of pencil and paper, a lot of people love Evernote for it's user friendly interface and cloud integration. Their free plan offers a limited amount of storage, but you can easily upgrade if you need more for your account.

13. Paypal

As far as payment systems go, Paypal is far from perfect...but it's easy to use and it's free to get an account. For people who need to set up a payment system--whether you're offering coaching services or even receiving payments for partnerships--Paypal is a good system to have. It's a global platform on only takes a few minutes to set up and link to your bank account.

14. Placeit

Placeit is a really interesting creative tool I recently discovered. It allows you to take an image and place it into a mockup on a smartphone, computer, or tablet. It's great for people who have an e-book, a PDF download, an e-course, or anything else that you want to show off how it would look on a screen. You can download the smaller images for free, or purchase really large ones if you need for a small fee.

15. Mailchimp

If you're just starting out as a blogger and looking to keep costs low, I recommend using Mailchimp as you build your email list. The interface is pretty easy to use and set up, and it's free up until a certain amount of subscribers. Once you're ready to take your blog to the next level, there are other email platforms that might suit your needs better, but Mailchimp is a good place to start so you at least have something in place without spending a ton of money.

BONUS: FREE Resources, Guides, E-books

There are tons of websites and bloggers out there who offer free resources, guides, downloads, e-books, trainings, etc. that you should ALWAYS take advantage of! It's free! Why not? Usually all you have to do is exchange your email address for the downloads, so it's worth checking out for tidbits of information that can help you take your blog to the next level. HINT: You can sign up for The City Sidewalks' Free Resource Library RIGHT HERE! I also offer free trainings and other special goodies to my subscribers :)

California Road Trip: Travel Guide Along the Pacific Coast Highway

Ready for the road trip of your lifetime? If you're looking to do a fun road trip along California's Pacific Coast Highway, look no further than this handy travel guide to get you there. In this travel guide to Highway 1, you'll get an itinerary with all your stops, drive times, as well as "good to know" information before and during your trip. Buckle up! Here we go!

California Road Trip: Travel Guide Along the Pacific Coast Highway

Are you into road trips? I'll admit...I'm not much of a road tripper. I prefer to get wherever I want to go as quick as possible, and being a city girl has made me hate driving. BUT...the one place that changed my mind about road trips? California.

Have you ever seen the California coastline?! It's breathtaking! I really don't think it's fair to the rest of the country that California has that much beauty! It's incredible. Taking a road trip along the California coastline--and, more specifically, along the Pacific Coast Highway--should be on everyone's bucket list. You see beaches, mountains, valleys, cities, vineyards... Ugh! There's everything!

If you're looking to do a fun road trip along Highway 1, look no further than this handy travel guide to get you there. I've mapped out an itinerary with all your stops, drive times, as well as provided you with "good to know" information before and during your trip. Buckle up! Here we go!

Los Angeles, California

Good to Know Information Before Your Trip:

For those of you who are planning your first visit to California, or maybe it's your first time doing the PCH drive, check out these FAQ's about planning your trip.

  • How long should I plan the trip for?

How long you plan for the trip is entirely up to you, but I would recommend at least 1 full week if you really want to get the full adventure. Of course, there are people who do it in 5 days, a weekend, or even 2 days, but I want you to have a really special experience with it! You're going to want to relax and enjoy when you can, pull over to see the views, or even spend an extra night in those special cities you fall in love with. Do at least 1 week minimum from start to finish.

  • Where should I start?

This is another personal preference. There's really no right or wrong answer for where you start or finish. We personally went from south to north, but I've heard that sometimes the traffic from north to south can be a little less hectic (can't confirm this from my own personal experience though!). You could even look up the price difference of flying into San Diego vs. Santa Ana vs. Los Angeles vs. San Francisco and make your decision that way! For this travel guide, I'll be giving you directions from south to north.

  • How much should I budget?

How much you budget will be based on the types of accommodations you're wanting to stay in during your trip and the entertainment costs you'll incur (including food). You can find budget friendly hostels or campgrounds along the way, or splurge on luxury 5-star resorts. You can buy groceries along the way and make food on the go, or you can dine at expensive restaurants. You'll also have to account for gas along your trip, so I'd say somewhere between $50-200+ per day depending on your travel style. *PS-If you're a budget conscious traveler, check out this post I did on how to spend $50 a day or less during travel!

Venice
  • Do I need a car?

Yes. Unfortunately, there is no public transportation that will allow you to do this trip, but that's half the fun of it! When you have a car, you get to pull over and enjoy the scenery as much as you want!

  • Can I go alone or should I go with people?

Yes, you can absolutely do this road trip alone! However, I will say that having another person or group with you during the road trip makes it a lot more fun. You'll be creating wonderful travel memories together; you can take turns taking pictures for one another; you can split all the travel costs; you can even take turns driving so everyone gets a chance to look out the window. Totally up to you though! I personally loved having Jay by my side through all of it (mainly because I never had to drive... hehehe!) and wouldn't have it any other way.

  • Where should I stay?

There a plenty of places you can get off and stay around PCH, but I would recommend spending some time in San Diego (or La Jolla) before/after the trip, Orange County (around Laguna Beach or Newport Beach), Los Angeles (around Venice or Santa Monica), Santa Barbara, Big Sur (or Carmel/Monterey for other options), and San Francisco.

The Road Trip Itinerary

Below you'll find the outlined itinerary we did for our Pacific Coast Highway journey. This itinerary is from south to north (starting in Orange County and ending in San Francisco), but you can easily invert it if you want to travel from north to south. Please keep in mind that all drive times are approximate and that traffic is a real deal in California. Always check your GPS or Google Maps for more accurate times. There will also be areas where you might have to merge onto other freeways besides Highway 1. Ok... Here we go!

Starting Point: Orange County

Laguna Beach

Fun fact: A lot of people think that PCH goes all the way to San Diego, but it actually ends around Dana Point in the O.C.! Southern California is a beautiful area filled with beaches, incredible food, surfing, epic coastal views, cute towns, and more. When you're starting out in Orange County, I recommend you visit spots like Laguna Beach and Newport Beach. There are lots of little towns right in a row along the coastline, so maybe pick 1-2 and explore. Use my travel guides for Laguna & Newport to find out what to do/eat while you're there. **If you're starting out here, you can fly into either San Diego and drive up, or fly into Santa Ana and hang around the area to explore before heading north.

Also consider stopping by: San Diego, La Jolla, or San Clemente before you start the official Highway 1 Adventure. It's technically not part of the official route, but it's worth exploring if you have time!

Los Angeles

IMG_1761.jpg

Drive time from Orange County: Approx. 1hr 30min

After spending time in the O.C., your next stop will be Los Angeles. I recommend getting off PCH to see Santa Monica and/or Venice since they are closest to the coastline (and the cutest I.M.O.). Both towns are right next to each other and offer that cool Cali beach vibe that you've probably seen in movies and TV shows. Walk around Main Street, rent a bike to go along the boardwalk, stroll down Abbot Kinney Boulevard, or get something to eat along the water. Use my travel guide to Venice to see what you can do/eat while you're there.

Also consider stopping by: Long Beach or Malibu

Santa Barbara

santa barbara ca.jpg

Drive time from Los Angeles: Approx. 1hr 40min

Santa Barbara might be my favorite city in all of California (it's a toss up between this and San Francisco). I guarantee you'll fall in love the minute you arrive to this "American Riviera," as the locals call it. There's endless Spanish-style architecture throughout the city, incredible places to eat, wonderful beaches, and tons of culture to explore and experience. See my travel guide to Santa Barbara for things to do, places to stay, or where to eat when you pass through.

Also consider stopping by: Montecito, Summerland, or Solvang. Solvang is a little off the path of Highway 1, but it is such a gorgeous, little town that is worth exploring. You can even stay over at this ranch resort that's like a luxury camp for adults!

San Luis Obispo

Drive time from Santa Barbara: Approx. 1hr 40min

After departing Santa Barbara, the next area you might want to stop in is San Luis Obispo. The town of SLO has a super cute and trendy downtown area, making it a great stop to get out for a bite to eat or to walk around. It's a lovely town that you'll enjoy seeing or driving through.

Also consider stopping by: Pismo Beach or Morro Bay

San Simeon

san simeon.jpeg

Drive time from San Luis Obispo: Approx. 1hr

Just before you get to Big Sur is the town of San Simeon. I definitely recommend getting off here to explore Hearst Castle. It's a remarkable hilltop mansion that was once the home of media mogul, William Randolph Hearst. The castle is a must-see along the Pacific Coast Highway road trip. Check out this post on Hearst Castle to see all the details of booking your visit there.

Also consider stopping by: Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery is a great spot to pull over and get a glimpse of the elephant seals along the beach!

Big Sur

Big Sur

Drive time from San Simeon: Approx. 30min

Big Sur is a must-see destination that should be on everyone's bucket list. The natural beauty of this area is one you'll never forget and will absolutely take your breath away. Visit the epic waterfalls of McWay Falls, hike through one of the many state parks, or snap a picture near the historic Bixby Bridge. Check out this full travel guide to Big Sur for more details on what to do, where to stay, and where to eat there.

Also consider stopping by: McWay Falls, Pfeiffer Beach, and Bixby Bridge

Carmel-by-the-Sea

Drive time from Big Sur: Approx. 40min

Just north of Big Sur is the charming little town of Carmel-by-the-Sea. The quaint downtown area and lovely houses around the city makes you feel like you've stepped into some sort of West Coast fairytale. Stop around here to walk around downtown or grab something to eat. It's such a cute stop on your way up the coast. This is also around the area of the famous Pebble Beach golf course!

Also consider stopping by: Monterey

A Weekend Guide to Big Sur

Big Sur is an incredible destination that everyone should see at least once in their life. If you're heading to Big Sur, use this travel guide to be prepared with everything you need to know! Uncover good tips to know before you leave, along with recommendations on where to eat, where to stay, and what to do during your visit to Big Sur.

A Weekend Guide to Big Sur

I would argue to say that Big Sur is one of the most beautiful places in the entire world. Deep blue waters that crash along miles of glorious California coastline, the breeze against your face as you drive along the Pacific Coast Highway, and endless adventures and opportunities to explore nature. It is a truly magnificent place that you must see at least once in your lifetime.

If you're heading to Big Sur, or doing the great "California Road Trip," use this travel guide to Big Sur to be prepared with everything you need to know! I've got "good to know" tips for your journey (some of which I wasn't even aware of before going), recommendations on where to eat, where to stay, and what to do during your visit to Big Sur.

Good to Know Information Before Heading to Big Sur

Normally I just jump right into these travel guides with places to eat, sleep, and play, but Big Sur is different. This place requires a little bit of info beforehand, or else you're going to be baffled when you get there; so here are some good to know tips before you venture out to Big Sur:

Before You Go

  • There is absolutely ZERO cell phone service in Big Sur. Like, seriously, the second you cross over into Big Sur territory, your phone will go off the grid. It's kind of nice once you get used to the shock of not being constantly connected!

  • There's usually wifi at most of the popular restaurants, bars, and hotels, but don't count on it when you're out and about. Unplugging in nature is what it's all about!

  • You can do Big Sur in 1 day, but you should really spend at least 2 days there to see everything and take your time.

  • Big Sur is pricey (because they can be), so be prepared to spend some $$ while you're there. Those of you from NYC or other large cities will feel right at home spending about $15-18 for a cocktail and $20-30 for an entree.

  • Make your reservations as far in advance as you can since things tend to book up fast!

Bixby Bridge

Tips for the Drive

  • Rent (or have) a car. That's the only way to do it.

  • Safely stop along the road wherever you want to get out and enjoy the view. It's magnificent and you deserve to soak it in! Make sure your cameras are charged!

  • Pack snacks and drinks ahead of time so you can avoid paying astronomical prices at the convenience stores or restaurants in Big Sur.

  • Have some cash handy because certain state parks require a small entrance fee before you head in.

  • Have hiking and/or beach clothes readily available for you to grab and change into if the mood strikes you to get out and have an adventure. I'd recommend checking the weather ahead of time so you know which one to pack.

  • Pick up a copy of Big Sur's free tourist newspaper (available at almost any establishment in the area) so you can utilize the map. You won't have cell phone service, so it will be your life line. You can also just take a screenshot of this, which was the exact map we used to get around:

Alright... Now for the good stuff. Where to eat in Big Sur! Like I mentioned earlier, Big Sur is pricey. You're not going to have an easy time trying to avoid paying high prices for everything you eat, but it is possible to find some affordable options. There are also incredible luxury options if you want to splurge and go all out. The good news is that the food in Big Sur (at least the food that we had) is pretty damn good and typically comes in generous portions!

Budget:

  1. Big Sur Taphouse, 47520 Hwy 1 -- Great spot to grab a beer, big portions of comfort food, and watch whatever sport they have on TV

  2. Big Sur Deli, 47520 Hwy 1

  3. The Maiden Publick House, Village Center Shops, Hwy 1

Also try: Packing food before your trip, or driving to grocery store in Carmel-by-the-Sea for affordable groceries. Unfortunately, "budget" and "Big Sur" don't typically go together very often.

Moderate:

  1. Big Sur Bakery, 47540 Hwy 1 -- Ask any local where to eat in Big Sur and I guarantee this will be at the top of their list. Definitely a popular spot in the area! On the more expensive side of "moderate"

  2. Deetjen's Restaurant, 48865 Hwy 1 -- Another popular spot for both locals and travelers

  3. Fernwood Resort Bar & Grill, 47200 Hwy 1 -- AKA Fernwood Tavern. Tasty pizzas, bar food, and a great spot to hang out in a "pub" environment

  4. Nepenthe, 48510 Hwy 1 -- Food with a view!

  5. Cafe Kevah, 48510 Highway One -- Just downstairs from Nepenthe and supposedly more affordable

Also try: Big Sur Roadhouse (especially after they finish redecorating their space!), Big Sur River Inn Restaurant, Big Sur Lodge Restaurant, or Ripplewood Resort Restaurant (breakfast + lunch option)

Luxury:

  1. Sierra Mar, 47900 Hwy 1

  2. The Restaurant at Ventana, 48123 Hwy 1

Also try: Driving to Carmel-by-the-Sea for other luxury options

Budget:

Ripplewood Resort offers guests minimalist cabins in a woodsy setting. Some cabins even come equipped with full kitchens and private decks. Another great part about the property is the convenience store, restaurant, and gas station that are available for traveler's needs

Also try: Fernwood Resort, Deetjen's Big Sur Inn, Lucia Lodge, or Big Sur Campground and Cabins. There are quite a few other locations that provide campground or RV spaces as well.

Moderate:

Glen Oaks is a beautiful getaway in the heart of Big Sur that it is comprised of multiple fireside motor lodges and numerous single and multi-room cabins, all of which are newly renovated and remodeled. These separate options allow you to choose the exact type of experience you want to have during your stay: either "immersive glamping in the forest" or "comfortable luxury with a side of nature." I personally love the accommodations at Glen Oaks Big Sur (it's my preferred location to stay in Big Sur) because of the modern, luxurious comforts they provide within each lodge or cabin. Read more about what to expect during your stay at Glen Oaks Big Sur right here.

Also try: Treebones Resort (they also provide budget friendly options) or Deetjen's Big Sur Inn (some of their private rooms are on the moderate side)

Luxury:

Image via Post Ranch Inn

If you really want to splurge on luxury in Big Sur, Post Ranch Inn is your spot. This incredible, contemporary ranch-style hotel is set on a cliff that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Guests will enjoy rustic-chic suites or tree-houses, private decks with mountain or ocean views, 2 cliff-top infinity pools, and much more. No luxury is spared at the Post Ranch Inn.

Also try: Ventana Inn & Spa ($$$)

Things to do in Big Sur:

  1. Visit the iconic McWay Falls -- Probably one of the most breathtaking sights you'll see.

  2. See the purple sand at Pfeiffer Beach -- **HOW TO GET THERE: The road to get to Pfeiffer Beach is a bit hidden and narrow. When you're heading southbound, take the 2nd right after Big Sur Station. There will be a sign that says "NARROW ROAD: NO RV's OR TRAILERS." It costs $10 once you make your way down the narrow and winding road, but it is well worth it. Use caution while driving.

  3. Stop at Bixby Bridge to admire the architectural beauty

  4. Check out the "Portal to Big Sur" at Ragged Point Inn & Resort

  5. Walk down to Sand Dollar Beach and enjoy the view

  6. Hike through the Redwood Grove at Glen Oaks Big Sur and see Grandmother Pfeiffer -- The Redwood Grove near the BIg Sur River is a beautiful experience. Grandmother Pfeiffer is the second largest redwood in all of Big Sur.

  7. Visit any of the numerous parks to enjoy hiking, waterfalls, or campgrounds. -- There is Limekiln State Park, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, Andrew Molera State Park, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Salmon Creek Falls Trail, and much more. Some of these parks cost money to park or enter, so check ahead of time what the fees are or carry cash with you in the car.

  8. Safely stop anywhere along the road while you're driving to get out and take pictures. Big Sur is such a beauty that you should savor and enjoy.

  9. Visit Carmel-by-the-Sea and Monterey before/after your trip depending on which way you're driving.

  10. Visit Hearst Castle before/after your trip depending on which way you're driving. Check out this post for tips!

Luxury:

If you want an ultimate luxury experience while visiting Santa Barbara, look no further than the Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara. This magical wonderland of natural gardens and Spanish architecture is conveniently tucked away in the exclusive enclave of Montecito. You can read more about what to expect when you check-in right here!

Also try: Belmond El Encanto ($$$), San Ysidro Ranch ($$$$), or Bacara Resort & Spa ($$$$)

Things to do in Santa Barbara:

  • Walk the Urban Wine Trail - The Urban Wine Trail is basically a self-guided "wine tasting" crawl. You walk from tasting room to tasting room around the cool downtown Santa Barbara area. Each tasting room typically has a flight special that you can try multiple wines at once. Download the app on your smartphone and enjoy your tastings! *My favorite rooms were Grassini Family Vineyards, Jamie Slone, Cebada Winery, and Santa Barbara Winery; but there are so many others that are wonderful and cute as well!

  • Spend a morning at Ganna Walska Lotusland - This incredible botanic collection is located in depths of Santa Barbara's suburban area. It's a spectacular natural beauty that you must see during your stay! Read more about my visit to Lotusland and what you can expect right here.

  • Explore the cool galleries and shops of the Funk Zone - The Funk Zone is a new, up and coming neighborhood of SB. There are hip and trendy galleries, boutiques, and restaurants popping up all the time now. It's definitely worth it to walk around, check out some of the shops, and then stop in and eat at one of the great restaurants there.

  • Walk around the Presidio - The Presidio is another neighborhood of Santa Barbara that you should spend some time walking around. What you'll find here is a lot of the beautiful Spanish-style architecture and influence, fun places to eat and drink, and even some great boutiques to stop in around.

  • Do a Santa Barbara Food Tour - There's no better way to get to know a city than by tasting the cuisine. My personal favorite food tour is Taste Santa Barbara Food Tours. You can read more about it and what you can expect right here.

  • Ride the town's Hop-On, Hop-Off Trolley - I'm a big fan of any Hop-On, Hop-Off tour, and especially this one. Instead of those overbearing double-deck buses that you normally have in major cities, this one is a cute little trolley! Sure, it's a little touristy; but it's the best way to get around and see a lot of stuff in a short amount of time. The trolley takes you by great landmarks, such as the Old Mission Santa Barbara, where you're able to get off to explore until the next trolley comes around.

  • Watch the sunrise AND sunset over Butterfly Beach - Because Santa Barbara is located along a south-facing curve of California, people are able to catch the beautiful sunrises and sunsets over the same coastline. Head to Butterfly Beach, which is located just in front of the Four Seasons Resort, and catch the breathtaking views.

  • See the view from the top of the Santa Barbara Courthouse - If you want a spectacular view of the city, walk up the steps to catch a view from the top of the Santa Barbara Courthouse, which is just as beautiful as the view!

  • Attend the weekly farmers market on State Street - Check the local schedule to see when the weekly farmers market is being held. It's a great time to meander around State Street and buy some local goods.

  • Explore the downtown area around State Street - Downtown Santa Barbara is full of so many cute boutiques, restaurants, galleries, and more! You should definitely spend a good amount of time just walking around the State Street area. Walk through La Arcada, check out the Art Museum, or stop in somewhere to eat!

  • Visit the Santa Barbara Zoo - The Santa Barbara Zoo is a beautiful, world-renowned zoo and a great place to spend the day with the family!

  • Spend a day on the waterfront - Walk around the Stearns Wharf, spend the day paddleboarding and/or kayaking, bike along the waterfront, or even head out on a boat tour to go explore the Channel Islands or go whale watching.

  • Go museum hopping - Santa Barbara has tons of wonderful museums and cultural landmarks for visitors to enjoy. You can check out the Old Mission, Casa del Herrero, Museum of Natural History, Museum of Art, or Cold Spring Tavern. Pick a category that suits you best (architecture, art, nature, etc.) and just explore it! There's something for everyone to enjoy in Santa Barbara.

  • See a show or attend a seasonal festival - Santa Barbara has tons of amazing seasonal events and festivals for visitors and locals to attend. Check out events like the Outrageous Film Festival, the Flamenco Arts Festival, the Art Walk, or the Pride at the Beach Festival!

  • Escape to Montecito or Summerland for the day - Check out the small towns of Montecito or Summerland, which surround Santa Barbara. They are cute, quaint, and full of personality. Drive through and maybe stop to walk around a bit!

Instagram Mistakes That Can Hurt Your Profile

How often do you check your social media to see if there are improvements you can make? Make sure you aren't making these 5 common Instagram mistakes that could be hurting your profile.

Instagram Mistakes That Can Hurt Your Profile: 5 Mistakes to Avoid if You Want to Create a Successful Profile

How often do you check your social media to see if there are improvements you can make?

Is it daily? Weekly? Monthly? Maybe never?

As you may have read in my past Instagram articles, you have two-tenths of a second to WOW someone when they come to your profile before they click away forever. You want to make sure that your content is top notch in order to get them to stay around!

I've recently been helping fellow creatives get on track with their Instagram strategy and I kept seeing 5 common things that have been detrimental to their IG profiles. I'm sharing these 5 mistakes with you now so you can avoid them and optimize your Instagram profile.

*PS: You can watch my FREE INSTAGRAM WEBINAR by clicking RIGHT HERE

Mistake 1: Over-Editing Your Photos

I think we've all been guilty of this at one point or another (I definitely have), but over-editing your photos is a huge no-no if you're trying to get more engagement on your posts. The biggest culprit? Too much saturation.

Basically...Don't over-edit your photos. Keep it simple and clean. People prefer this over heavy filters or too much unnatural color. A good trick if you're lost is to take a look at how larger accounts are editing their photos and see how they match up to yours. With a little practice, you'll be a pro in no time!

Mistake 2: No Clear Theme

The biggest reason why someone will click away from a profile is that there is no consistency or clear theme to the profile. Maybe the pictures are all over the place, or maybe they don't match the expectations listed in the bio (or even the IG name itself).

Solution? Pick 1 overarching theme to your profile, select 3 to 5 sub-categories under that theme, and post only those types of images. If it doesn't match, don't post it. You can do this until you feel like you've got a good groove of consistency going.

Mistake 3: No Call to Action in the Bio

Instagram has become more of a "brand builder" than a product pusher in recent months. People connect with your brand on IG, fall in love with you, and then interact with your brand offline.

Sooo... How do you make sure you capture those people once they leave IG? Make sure you always have your website or some kind of URL in your bio that they can refer back to. It doesn't have to be your blog; it can be your YouTube channel, your opt in page, or even a link to your Etsy store. Whatever it is, just make sure it leads people to where you want them to go.

*Pro tip: Use bit.ly to shorten your links so you don't have a massive jumble of characters in your bio.

Mistake 4: Including Your Watermark, Logo, or really any text on the photo

Time to throw a little harsh honesty in here... Watermarks, logos, and text over a photo is extremely distracting and Instagram users typically don't like it. Instagram is a visual platform and people want it to be kept that way.

Another harsh reality: If someone wants to take your photo, they will. Unfortunately, in this day and age, there is really little that can be done to protect property like that. People can easily just screenshot the photo and crop your watermark out; so just don't include it in the first place. It takes away from the natural beauty of the photo.

Are there exceptions to the rule? Of course. There always are. But generally speaking, having watermarks, logos, and text overlay is very distracting.

Mistake 5: Not Interacting with Others

The final "no-no" on this list is thinking that Instagram is a place where you don't need to play with others in order to grow your presence, your engagement, or your brand.

With Instagram's new algorithm, engagement is going to be the #1 priority for people who are trying to grow their brand on Instagram. You need to make sure you're interacting with other people on IG in order to do this. Respond to people who comment on your pics, show them love back, follow them back; reach out to new people who have similar interests as you and comment on or like their pics.

There are so many ways to get involved, so make sure you're doing doing something! If you're confused, my Instagram E-Course for bloggers, brands and creatives will help guide you to creating a successful Instagram profile so you can get paid for your passion (and it's on pre-sale right now for $59!).

12 Summer Vacation Ideas

Summer is finally here! It's time to pack up those flip flops and sunscreen and head out for a much needed summer vacation. If you're ready to hit the road but still having some trouble deciding where to go, check out these 12 summer vacation ideas to help you plan your holiday adventures! Bon Voyage!

1. Chicago, USA

There is NO better place to be in the summer than Chicago. THERE. I SAID IT. Chicago has the best summer of any city in the world! It's probably because we've all been cooped up all year and are ready to bust out when "Summer Time Chi" rolls around. You've got unbeatable city vibes, the lake, the beach, festivals on festivals, beautiful weather, world class cuisine, music, rooftops, culture... Ahhh! Seriously just about anything you want out of a summer city is here in Chicago! If you don't believe me, come and see it for yourself! *Check out my Chicago City Guide here!

Best for: Family travel, solo travel, couples travel, group travel, urban travel, and anyone else who is genuinely looking to have an amazing time in the city during the summer.

2. Montreal, Canada

The city of Montreal seems to come alive after those chilly winters have passed. Montreal is a fabulous summer destination for people who want a taste of Europe without the transatlantic price. You'll find incredible architecture and historic sites, delicious food, great shopping, and let's not forget about that unbelievable view on the top of Parc du Mont-Royal. My expert travel tip: wake up early and hike to the top. You'll get the killer view sans any other tourists; plus it'll count as your workout for the day!

Best for: Family travel, solo travel, couples travel, group travel, and anyone who wants a European feel without paying the big $$.

3. Portland, USA (x2)

You're getting a bonus one here, everyone! 2 Portlands for the price of 1: Portland, Maine and Portland, Oregon.

Is there anything better than a juicy lobster roll and an ice-cold glass of beer in the middle of summer? This delicious combo is plentiful in the New England area, and Portland, Maine is one of the best cities to stop by and get it during the summer. Wander the old cobblestone streets of Old Port, or have a little kayak adventure in the water. Portland, ME is a great mellow city for families to visit in the summer.

Best for: Family travel, couples looking to relax in a quiet town, or anyone who wants a taste of New England charm.

I'm not sure if there is anything that Portland, Oregon doesn't offer in the summer. They have world-renowned farmers markets, unbeatable microbrews, outdoor activities like hiking and biking, beautiful waterfalls and landscapes, and a bustling foodie scene. It's a must-see for any summer traveler!

Best for: Family travel, solo travel, couples travel, group travel, nature lovers, and young people who love to check out new, bustling cities.

4. Munich, Germany

People typically associate Munich with the celebrations of Oktoberfest, but this city has so much to offer visitors in the summer too. You can bike around the old historic streets of the city, attend numerous outdoor festivals in the month of August, tour medieval palaces during the day, and lounge in the biergartens by night. It's also a great destination to visit for those of you who love cities that have a little bit of old combined with the new.

Best for: Family travel, solo travel, couples travel, group travel, and anyone who is looking to explore a unique European city that has lots of culture and history to offer.

5. Nice, France

Who wouldn't want to spend their summer in the French Riviera? With fabulous cities like Cannes and Monaco being just a short train ride away, Nice is a wonderful place for luxury travelers to visit and kick back on the beach--or on a 30 ft yacht (if that's your thing). Nice is known for it's old world charm mixed with the modern world energy. The streets are always full of vibrant markets and buildings, artists looking for seasonal inspiration, and even the occasional celebrity or two.

Best for: Luxury travel, couples travel, or anyone wanting to spend their time along the gorgeous French Riviera.

6. Maui, USA

Despite Maui typically being a winter getaway for vacationers, the summer time actually offers calmer waters and less rain. This is perfect for travelers who love to surf or bum on the beach all day. Maui boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and plenty of other ecotourism activities for outdoor adventurers. You might even get some better deals in the summer time too...

Best for: Family travel, luxury travel, couples travel, eco-friendly travel, adventure travel, or anyone else who enjoys island life and all it has to offer.

7. Amsterdam, Netherlands

The city that is typically grey and gloomy most of the year instantly lights up during the summer months. Amsterdam is a great city to visit in the summer when the skies are clear and you're greeted with 60-70 degree weather almost every single day. You can bike around the cobblestone streets, visit the famous canals and all the gorgeous architecture that surrounds them, or attend outdoor summer festivals. There is even an event called Open Garden Days where visitors can get an exclusive look at the stunning, private gardens behind the houses along the canal.

Best for: Urban travel, couples travel, solo travel, group travel, or anyone who wants to explore another European city that is filled with history and culture.

8. San Francisco, USA

San Francisco is really a year-round city, but it's absolutely worth mentioning on here for a specific reason. The months of June-July actually bring cooler and foggy weather to the city of San Francisco, which is great if you want to beat the summer heat; BUT...the months of August-October often bring around a beautiful Indian summer. So for those of you who are looking to prolong that summer vibe, book a trip for San Francisco at the end of summer and beginning of fall. You'll get gorgeous weather, loads of festivals, and you'll probably beat out the hoards of tourists who mistakenly went in the colder months. *Check out my San Francisco City Guide here!

Best for: Urban travel, solo travel, family travel, couples travel, group travel, or anyone who wants to prolong their summer vacation and visit a great city at the end of summer/beginning of fall.

9. Santorini, Greece

santorini.jpg

Although Santorini has become a bit of a tourist destination in recent years, it is a popular destination for a reason. The perfect, blue waters of the Aegean Sea are at prime time for swimming in the summer months, making this a great destination for beach and ocean lovers. Stroll through the quaint towns of Fira and Oia and marvel at the whitewashed buildings with blue roofs that sit along the cliffs. By night, grab some incredible seafood for dinner and cozy up with a glass of wine to watch the sunset.

Best for: Couples travel, luxury travel, family travel, or anyone who is looking to island hop through the Mediterranean.

10. Yellowstone, USA

Summer is definitely a prime time to get to Yellowstone. It's an affordable vacation spot, and visitors won't be faced with the struggles of park closures that you often see in the winter months. It's a perfect destination for people who want to explore the great outdoors, go hiking through lush forests, see the wildlife that roams the park, and even get a close up of the famous geyser, Old Faithful.

Best for: Family travel, couples travel, group travel, adventure travel, eco-friendly travel, or anyone who wants to explore the great outdoors.

11. Salzburg, Austria

I can't think of many destinations that are as naturally beautiful as the city of Salzburg. This city, which is known for the lush, rolling hills seen on "The Sound of Music," is nothing short of spectacular--especially in the summer. With views of the Alps through the city, medieval and baroque architecture, unique and colorful buildings along the water, and impeccable landscape, it's a fabulous international destination for people who want to visit Europe without paying crazy prices like you would in Paris or London.

Best for: Family travel, couples travel, group travel, solo travel, cultural travel, or anyone who wants to visit Europe without paying astronomical prices.

12. Alaska, USA

Ok, so I'm doing something a little different here. I'm suggesting an entire state instead of just 1 city. The state of Alaska is a must-see in summer months. Why? You have endless outdoor activities (hiking, kayaking, whale watching, etc.), comfortable weather ranging between 60-80 degrees, glacier trekking, and incredible natural landscapes. If you haven't been to Alaska in the summer months (which most people claim is just about the only reasonable time of year to come), you are seriously missing out. My preferred method of travel here is by cruise so you're able to see as much of Alaska as possible in a shorter amount of time. Opt for early summer or end of summer to get the best deals. *Plus, you'll probably have to stop over in Vancouver on your way, which is also an amazing summer destination!

Best for: Family travel, couples travel, group travel, eco-friendly travel, adventure travel, solo travel, and anyone who is looking for a unique experience in the states.

Where are your summer adventures taking you? Are you heading to any of these places? Comment below with other great summer destinations or vacation ideas!

9 Ways to Thrive on Your Next Flight

We've all heard about "how to survive a flight," but what about how to thrive during a flight? Here are 9 ways for you to thrive on your next flight so that you'll have a positive experience during travel and no longer have to cringe at the mere thought of going to the airport.

9 Ways to Thrive on Your Next Flight

We've all seen tips about "how to survive your next flight," but I don't like to live under those negative terms. Instead of surviving, what about thriving? Ever wonder how you can THRIVE on your next flight? (Yes, the power of positive thinking is a real thing--even in travel!)

It's time to shift that mindset, people! Today, I'm giving you 9 ways for you to thrive on your next flight so that you'll have a positive experience during travel and no longer have to cringe at the mere thought of going to the airport.

Pre-Airport

1. Get a Mobile Boarding Pass

It's 2016, everyone, and it's time to start taking advantage of the technological advances we've made with travel. It really blows my mind that there are still people who don't take advantage of getting a mobile boarding pass sent to their phones. Like...why would you want to sit in line at the airport to get that little piece of paper? It's time consuming, a waste of paper, and it's just a pain in the butt!

I get that there are extenuating circumstances that cause you to HAVE to get the physical boarding pass; but if it's possible, download your airline's mobile app (even if you delete it right after your flight), and get your mobile boarding pass sent to your phone before you head to the airport. It's so easy, saves a ton of time waiting in line, and it's good for the environment! Heyyy!

2. Bring a Positive Attitude

Airports have somehow become a hub for cranky people. Have you noticed this too? It sometimes seems like no one there is happy, and that energy spreads--fast. People are pissed off because of the lines, they are in a hurry, the airline customer service agents are having a bad day... Whatever the reason, it's just not a generally happy place.

But... Can you imagine what would happen if everyone came to the airport with a smile and a good, positive attitude? OMG! The dynamic would completely change! People would be helpful, humorous, and pleasant to be around! Well, all it takes is one person to start and shift that dynamic. One positive attitude, one smile, one friendly greeting, and it could become a domino effect. Be that person.

I've actually tried this on numerous occasions, and my positive attitude has actually paid off big time for me. Because of my positive attitude, I've gotten upgraded to Business Class FOR FREE on an international flight when the airline messed up my reservation (comfortable living for 14 hours will always trump a hissy fit); I've gotten my luggage checked for free; I've skipped the TSA line to the front; I've gotten free food and drinks on the flight; and I've even gotten thousands of reward points put back into my account for providing really positive feedback about my flight experiences (all done on my own will). Having a gracious, positive attitude spreads that good energy and it pays off!

3. ...And a Proper Water Bottle

So you might have read this in my recent article, "How to Save Money During Travel," but I still stand by the idea that every traveler needs to bring a specific type of water bottle during their trip.

There are 2 types of water bottles I like:  1) SmartWater--purely because of the bottle itself and the fact that it barely crinkles when you put it in your bag; and 2) A bottle with an integrated filter system in it so that you can safely drink water from anywhere in the world--even a pond!

Whichever you choose, don't forget to pack the bottle in your bag before you head to the airport so you're not paying ridiculous prices for water at the airport. I've done this before and it hurts so much to fork over the cash just because you forgot to plan ahead :(

At the Airport

4. Carry-On vs. Checking Your Bag?

Ohhhh the age-old question: Should you check your bag or carry it on? Here's the thing... It comes down to a few factors: price, convenience, and in-flight experience. I really have mixed feelings about this one, so I've broken it down into some pros and cons for you to decide what's best for you:

  • Pros/Cons of Carrying On Your Bag

    • (+) Quick access into the terminal (assuming you have your mobile boarding pass)
    • (+) It forces you to pack less and more efficiently
    • (+) Save money on baggage fees
    • (+) The airline definitely won't lose your luggage
    • (+) Quick access out of the airport once you land
    • (-) It forces you to pack less (ugh I just wanted to bring those other sandals!)
    • (-) You could be fighting for overhead bin space
    • (-) Probably won't have optimal leg stretching space if you're storing your 2nd bag under the seat in front of you
    • (-) Lugging bags around can be heavy
  • Pros/Cons of Checking Your Bag

    • (+) Don't have to carry anything around inside the terminal
    • (+) You can pack however much you want
    • (+) Optimal leg stretching space is pretty much guaranteed
    • (+) Sometimes it's free (shout out to all the airlines who don't charge baggage fees--you da real ones)
    • (-) Baggage fees
    • (-) Waiting in line to check it
    • (-) Waiting in line to retrieve it
    • (-) Risk of it getting lost (which isn't that big of a percentage anymore)

5. Skip the Coffee

I know it may be hard to resist the urge to have your daily "necessary" cup of coffee, but do everything you can to skip the coffee before a flight. I'm not a doctor and I'm not here to argue the effects of coffee on the body, but I do know that flying at high altitudes can severely dehydrate the body. Opt for drinking water instead of coffee to replenish your system and prepare it for the journey ahead. Plus, you won't feel those caffeine jitters on the flight and might have a better chance of relaxing.

6. ...And the Unhealthy Foods

Again, I'm not a doctor, but I do know that eating unhealthy foods (i.e. processed foods, "bad" carbs, too much salt, fast food, etc.) can cause bloating, discomfort, dehydration, irregular blood flow, and other gross stuff that you definitely DON'T want to experience when you're thriving on your flight. Skip the airport food and bring your own snacks instead. Pack a little fruit, maybe some veggies, a little yogurt...whatever you want! As long as it's healthy and will hold you over until you reach your destination. You'll save money and your body will thank you for it.

On the Flight

7. Block Out the Noise

We've all been on those flights with screaming babies, obnoxious passengers, or overbearing flight attendants. Do yourself a favor and create your own personal oasis in your airline seat. Block out all the noise you can. I personally love traveling with a pair of earplugs or some noise cancelling headphones to quiet of all the commotion around me. Bonus points if you can block out the light too with a hat, sunglasses, or even a scarf!

8. Ease Your Flying Anxiety

So I have a confession... I have flying anxiety. I know! How can I be a travel blogger and still get anxious to fly?! I don't know, but it's something I deal with every time I step onto an airplane. Because of this, I've come up with a few ways to ensure I have as peaceful a flight as possible. Try some of these tips out if you also have flying anxiety:

  • Have relaxing meditation music queued up on your device. I have my specific playlist for flying ready to go, I plug my noise cancelling headphones in, and I get in the zone.
  • Use simple breathing techniques to calmly bring yourself to your center. When you're tense or anxious, your body's natural reaction is to stop breathing (or breath shorter/lighter), so it's really important to remember to breathe! No hyperventilating allowed--just calm breathing. Deep one in, deep one out...
  • Think positive thoughts. I really believe that flying anxiety is worsened because the media only highlights all the negative stories about travel. Shifting your mindset to believing everything is going to run smoothly and how it should is one of the best ways to ease your tension and anxiety. Do everything in your power to overcome any negative thoughts with positive ones. And breathe!
  • Throw back a cocktail or two. Ok, so I know that there are tons of medical reasons why you shouldn't drink on a flight or drink to ease anxiety; but, I have to admit, I've been on flights where I was feeling a little more anxious than usual and I gulped down a glass of Sauvignon Blanc (or two) and instantly felt more at ease. Please get me right here: I'm not advocating drinking to solve anxiety. I'm just saying that it helps me (and some other people I know) relax a little during air travel. If you're going to do so, please drink responsibly...and don't be an asshole.

9. ...And Relax

What's your idea of relaxing during travel? Is it reading a good book? Listening to your favorite jams? Taking a much needed nap? Whatever it is, do it! Take a break from the work and hustle and relax while you're on your flight! Put your bags up in the storage bins, stretch out your legs, and take the time to chill out. It's one of the few times that you can unapologetically unplug from the world and have time for yourself.

Prep your entertainment before hand: charge all of your devices; upload that TV show you've been wanting to catch on your iPad; download a book you want to read on your Kindle; or buy that magazine you've been wanting to flip through. You are in complete control of making sure you thrive on your flight. *I personally love kicking back and taking a nap.

10 Ways to Immerse Yourself Like a Local in Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo is a city filled with rich history--both old and new. The best way to experience what it has to offer now is to live it like a local! Use this travel guide to experience Santo Domingo's culture of old and new and immerse yourself like a local.

10 Ways to Immerse Yourself Like a Local in Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo: "The City of Firsts." The first street of the New World, the first cathedral from the Spanish settlers, the first hospital of the New World, and even the first university of the New World all call Santo Domingo home. It is an exceptional city that has come a long way over the last few centuries and has still managed to keep its charm.

It's clear that this city is so rich in history, but what many travelers don't know is how modern this "city of firsts" has become. The best way to experience what Santo Domingo has to offer now is to live it like a local! If you're heading to Santo Domingo for a visit, consider these 10 ways to experience this "culture of old and new" and immerse yourself like a local.

1. Explore the Colonial City

Walking through the Colonial City, also known as Zona Colonial (Colonial Zone), is like taking a step through time. In your mind, you know it's the present day, but everything around you says otherwise. Old cobblestone streets, 16th-century architecture, passageways covered with bright, pink bougainvillea and other tropical plants, horse drawn carriages, 17th-century ruins... It's like you're stepping back into the times of Columbus or Cortés.

The best way to experience the Colonial City is to just walk around and explore. The streets of Zona Colonial are vibrant and lively filled with one colorful building after another. Stop in along the shops on Calle El Conde, people watch in the Parque Colon, or stroll down the New World's oldest street, Calle Las Damas, which dates back to the early 1500s! It's a truly magical area of the city that really makes you love and appreciate the infusion of old and new.

2. Visit the Mercado Modelo

Mercado Modelo Santo Domingo

Do you want a real, local shopping experience? Head to Santo Domingo's largest market, Mercado Modelo, for an experience you won't forget. Now, understand that this isn't your typical shopping experience. This is a truly unique, Dominican experience. I'm not kidding when I say this place has everything. You can find aphrodisiac love potions, fresh produce, exotic flowers, native artwork, and a ton of other goods that you can only get from the D.R. It is absolutely worth stopping by for a bit. Snag some deals on incredible Dominican coffee, or try your luck at negotiating on some unique jewelry.

3. Drink Mamajuana

Mamajuana

Speaking of aphrodisiac love potions... Have you ever heard of Mamajuana? Mamajuana is a special Dominican concoction that is said to be a natural aphrodisiac and herbal healer! It's sold all over the island and usually consists of rum, red wine, and honey that is soaked in a bottle of tree bark, spices, and herbs. It is tasty and STRONG! You can buy a bottle with all the ingredients already in it, or you can get the individual spice packs to make it yourself at home. You can find Mamajuana at Mercado Modelo or at various shops and stands around the island.

4. Taste the Local Cuisine (like Sancocho, Habichuelas con Dulce, or Mangú)

Nothing gets you immersed into the local culture quite like cuisine. One of the best things about Santo Domingo right now is the rise of their culinary scene. Chefs from all over the world are coming to this city to showcase their expertise and skills, which is great news for locals and travelers alike. That being said, there's nothing quite like the comfort of good 'ol home cooking.

If you're visiting Santo Domingo, there are a few key dishes that you must try during your stay.

  • Sancocho - A hearty stew mixed with multiple meats, vegetables, spices, and sometimes rice Incredibly tasty and ideal for family gatherings or special events!

  • Mangú - Mashed plantains typically served with sauteed red onions and/or queso frito (fried cheese)

  • Tostones and/or Mofongo - Variations of dishes made from fried plantains (also popular in other Caribbean cultures)

  • Habichuelas con Dulce - A sweet, rich cream made from beans, coconut, sweet potato, sugar, and little cookies on top

  • Yaniqueques - A tasty snack made of fried flour (similar to Johnnycakes)

  • Pescado Frito - A completely fried fish, which is typically enjoyed by the beach

5. Stop in a Dominican Cigar Shop

Move over Cuban Cigars! Dominican Cigars are coming out on top as some of the best quality cigars in the world right now. When you're wandering through the streets of the Colonial Zone, make sure you stop in at a local Cigar Shop just to get a look, or even buy a few to take home with you!

When you walk into these small shops, you're immediately hit with the smell of the fresh tobacco, which almost feels nostalgic and comforting, as if it were from a different time. You'll see the craftsmanship and beautiful design of the boxes, the traditional Caribbean hats and shirts for sale, and even the unique wood shelving that is home to hundreds of different types of cigars. Bonus points if you can find a shop that has their cigar makers doing their thing right in the middle of the store! It's fascinating to stand around and watch this incredible craft right in front of your eyes.

6. Dance Merengue All Night at Monasterio de San Francisco

You haven't immersed yourself into Dominican (or any Latin) culture until you start dancing. Latin dancing is absolutely a key component to the Dominican culture! Merengue, salsa, bachata... you name it, they do it! The great thing is you don't even have to be good at it, as long as you try and have fun!

If you really want to rub elbows with the locals and immerse yourself into the scene, head to the ruins at Monasterio de San Francisco every Sunday night from 6-10pm for a night of live entertainment, dancing, food, and fun. Join the crowds of people who come to listen to music (from bands like Grupo Bonye), eat and drink "picnic style" with loved ones, and dance the night away under the stars right in the heart of the Colonial City. You'll walk away from this event feeling like you just got invited to a "locals only" party.

7. Eat Delicious, Greasy Food at Barra Payan After a Night of Fun

After dancing the night away--and maybe even throwing back some Presidente beers--you might be in the mood for some greasy, comfort food to get you going again. Head straight to Barra Payan to get your fix. This diner + sandwich shop dates back to the 1950s and has become a Dominican institution for locals and travelers alike. You really can't go wrong with any sandwich or shake on the menu, but the Payan Club with fries is a personal favorite. Everything is so delicious, and really affordable too! It's a great spot if you're looking to save money on food.

8. Shop the Pop-up Antique Markets

There are always different kinds of markets popping up all over Santo Domingo, but a great one to catch is the Antique Market that takes place at the plaza across the street from Hostal Nicolas de Ovando on Calle Las Damas. Local vendors gather in the plaza to display their most prized antiques to sell to customers. Even if you don't buy anything, it's wonderful to walk through, look at all of the unique items, and even learn some history about them.

9. Take a Drive to the Beach

Even though Santo Domingo doesn't have immediate beach access like some other popular D.R. destinations, it doesn't stop the locals from finding the most beautiful beaches to head to on the weekends. One popular place to kick back in the sand for a few hours during the day is Boca Chica, which is about 45-minutes to 1-hour driving from Santo Domingo. Take a walk along the beach, have lunch at Boca Marina, or set up a snorkeling or diving excursion for the day. Either way, you can't go wrong when you're sitting in front of the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean.

10. Pickup a Pair of Handmade Shoes at La Alpargateria

If you go to Santo Domingo and come back empty handed, you're doing something wrong. If there's one unique place you must stop in to shop, eat, and drink, it's La Alpargateria. This amazing boutique is one-part shoe store, one-part bar/coffee shop, and one-part tapas bar. You can browse the gorgeous selection of handmade espadrilles for men and women and then head to the back lounge to grab a coffee or snack on some tapas. It's a very chic and cozy environment right in the heart of the city. Plus, the fabulous, handmade shoes, which they make in house, are a total conversation starter! Designs and sizes are limited, so have some patience when shopping around for your favorite ones.

These suggestions are just scratching the surface on what you can do to immerse yourself like a local in Santo Domingo. The best way to have a truly unique experience when traveling is to step outside of your comfort zone and have fun exploring! Have you ever been to Santo Domingo? What are your favorite things to do or local spots to hang out? Comment below with more suggestions!

It's a simple diner that serves warm sandwiches and delicious shakes 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Definitely stop by this DR institution on your trip!

  • El Meson de la Cava, $$, Av. Mirador Sur 1 -- A beautiful restaurant hidden away in a cave. Food is amazing, and there is even live music on some nights on the patio outside!

  • Pat'e Palo, $$$, Calle La Atarazana 25 -- This European Brasserie is the perfect example of those international flavors coming to Dominican Republic. The food still has Dominican influence, but lots of European flair. Very good place to enjoy people watching.

  • Lulu Tasting Bar, $$$, Calle Padre Billini #151 -- A very happening and trendy place right now in the heart of the Colonial City. It is a prime showcase of how the city is marrying old and new. Come here for the lively atmosphere, awesome tapas, and a great drink menu.

  • Pura Tasca, $$, Calle Emiliano Tejera 101 -- Great tapas bar in along a lively strip of restaurants in the Colonial City. Try a few small plates with a side of Sangria!

Located right in front of the Columbus Park, this bustling restaurant makes you feel like you've been transported to the busy brasseries of Europe. The food (and especially the dessert) is great and there is always action going on in and around the restaurant.

Conveniently located right in the heart of the Colonial City is the new and trendy Billini Hotel. The interior is modern and elegant with a stylish bar, Spanish courtyard, and even rooftop deck + pool that boasts amazing city views. Suites are spacious and comfortable with private balconies and even your own tablet to control room functions and order room service!

You'll be living in historic luxury when you stay at Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovando. This 16th-century building, which is located on the very first paved street of the New World, was once the home of Governor Nicolas de Ovando. It has been restored into a luxurious (and affordable) hotel that comes with modern Colonial-style decor, upscale dining options, a Spanish-style courtyard, a large pool and more.

If you want to seriously live in the lap of luxury--i.e. 24hr butler/maid service, iPhones + iPads on loan, private swimming pools, exclusive in-room entertainment services, etc.--then look no further than the premier accommodations at Casas del XVI. This property is comprised of several houses that were bought, renovated, and redesigned to create the luxurious atmosphere that visitors can enjoy. The renovation process managed to keep the old charm of the infrastructure and marry it to the new, modern conveniences that guests are able to experience today.

10 Common Blogging Mistakes You Should Avoid If You Want to Turn Your Blog Into a Business

Turning your blog into a business is a bit more complex than people think, but it can also be really fun and rewarding. If you want to turn your blog into a business, make sure you avoid these 10 common mistakes so you can pave the way for success!

10 Common Blogging Mistakes You Should Avoid If You Want to Turn Your Blog Into a Business

Blogging as a career is so much more than just opening up your laptop, typing up some articles, and snapping a couple pictures here and there. If you want to turn your blog into a business, there are crucial steps you need to take to make sure that you pave the way for success.

Let me just say this: Turning your blog into a business is a bit more complex than people think, but it can also be really fun and rewarding. The feeling you get when you make your first dollar from your blog is unforgettable. It's your baby and YOU created it!

I've observed some of the things that make a successful blogger, and observed some of things that make and unsuccessful blogger. I've made A TONNNNN of mistakes in my blogging career, and a lot of them have set me back some time in my success...but hey! That's life! Live it, learn it! I'm here to share those common blogging mistakes so that you can avoid them and save some time by learning from my mistakes.

Mistake #1: Paying Attention to the Noise Around You

Ok, so this one can have 2 meanings. I'm talking about (1) the people in the beginning who will try and talk you out of starting a blog or make you doubt your decision, and (2) the other bloggers who claim to have the secret formula to success for turning your blog into a 6-figure empire overnight (UGH. STOP WITH THIS SHIT!).

Listen up: If you want to start a blog, DO IT! I've even mapped out an easy 5-step process for you right here. Don't let someone talk you down or make you question whether or not you should do it. Trust your gut instinct and go with it! What's the worst that can happen? You decide you don't like it and move on? Ok! **Before I started TCS, someone I once knew tried to talk me out of it by saying, "blogs weren't relevant anymore." BOY, AM I GLAD I DIDN'T TAKE THAT ADVICE!

There are a lot of bloggers and coaches out there who are trying to hook in other bloggers to buy into their "formula for 6-figure success" these days. You guys... Don't fall into the trap of listening to the noise around you. Making 6-figures in any business takes a lot of hard work, dedication, passion, and time. THIS is the TRUE formula: Put your head down and grind it the f*ck out. **PS-Check out this incredible post from byRegina.com that exposes this phenomenon of the 6-figure trap.

Mistake #2: Not Writing Constantly in the Beginning

Oh boy, did I learn this one the hard way... When you start a blog, you must write prolifically in the beginning. Seriously! Pump out as much crap as you can. And I say "crap" because that is probably what it will be. CRAP.

My goodness...I look at the stuff I posted when I first started and I want to claw my eyes out! It's horrible! But that's the reason you need to write constantly so that you can put the bad stuff behind you and make improvements fast. It will help you find your voice and it will get you in the routine of putting out quality content. The more you do it, the better you will become.

Mistake #3: Not Starting an Email List or Creating an Opt-In

You know all those social media followers you have? 10K on Instagram, 5K on Facebook, 20K on Twitter... Guess what? They could be gone tomorrow. Legally speaking, you do not own your social media followers. But do you know what you DO own? Your email list.

If you haven't done so already, start an email list! Even if you only send 1 newsletter of your blog post roundups, start it now! Open an account with an email provider (Mailchimp, ConvertKit, Aweber, etc.) and get rolling. I waited until late in the game to start building my email list and it's one of my biggest mistakes. Lesson learned!

The best way to grow your email list is to create some sort of opt-in or freebie that people can get when they sign up. Even if you put together a nice, professional looking, 1-page checklist that people can get value out of when they sign up, that is better than nothing. There are so many "sign up for my newsletter" messages out there that you want to stand out from the rest. Create something of value to give away to your audience FOR FREE.

Mistake #4: Waiting Until Your Blog is "Perfect" to Publish It

Are you in the process of designing your blog, playing around with the layout, or messing with it until it's perfect? STOP! Don't wait until it is "perfect" to hit publish because that doesn't exist. As long as you have the basic info (About Page, Social Media Links, & Blog/Home Page) that's all you need to start! Don't even worry about having tons of blog posts up. Just do it now or you'll get analysis paralysis.

I've probably gone through over 10+ different designs of TCS since I started it, and I'm STILL changing things all the time! It's never going to be perfect. You'll like it for a bit, and then want to change something. So don't waste time waiting for perfection. Just get yourself out there now and start at it!

Mistake #5: Not Utilizing Pinterest

You know what my #1 traffic referral is? Pinterest. Yes, Pinterest. And by a massive landslide too. The platform that we all kind of overlooked turns out to be the biggest referral generator for me and tons of other bloggers.

You want to grow your blog and your traffic fast? Get on Pinterest. I grew my traffic over 800% in 2 months just by putting my content on Pinterest. Here's the easy step-by-step to start now:

  • Set up a Pinterest Business Account with your blog's name
  • Create a solid profile that includes a picture of your face (or logo if you're a biz) and type up a strong bio with great keywords peppered in
  • Use Canva (or other similar programs) to create Pinterest-length pins that will act as the cover to your blog posts
  • Upload those custom pins you just created and link your blog posts to them
  • Create relevant boards for your blog and pin to those boards
  • Join group boards to participate in and pin your content to those boards too

It takes a little work, but the results are sooo worth it. You can join me on Pinterest here!

Mistake #6: Playing the Comparison Game

Confession: This might be the #1 mistake I've made as an entrepreneur. There are so many other people in this space that it is extremely easy to look to the left or the right and find someone to compare yourself to. Not to mention all the bloggers right now who are putting out income reports to expose how much money they have made.

It can be really discouraging to a new blogger--or even veteran blogger--to look at all this stuff that's happening around you and feel like you don't measure up! You see someone else's blog and how good it looks, or you see this person's accomplishments and awards, or maybe this blogger's claim to making $100K their first year of blogging. It can be a REAL heavy shot to the self esteem and creative drive. I'm saying this because I've been through it!

You CANNOT play the comparison game. Comparison is the DEATH of creativity. The best thing you can do is put your head down and focus on you and what makes you happy. Stop focusing on what other bloggers are doing and look to yourself. That is their journey, not yours! The best thing I've done to battle this (yes, I still struggle with it sometimes) is to be selective with what you put your focus into. Focus on creating, not comparing.

Mistake #7: Thinking Your Blog Will Go From 0 to 10K Views Overnight

I get an eye twitch every time a brand new blogger posts on a Facebook group that they just started 1 month ago and only have 100 views on their blog. Reality check: that is to be expected! You just started your blog and 100 views is so great! You should be celebrating, not feeling discouraged (Are you playing the comparison game? Is that why you're discouraged?!).

I wish that I could tell you that your blog will become an instant overnight success; but unless you're a celebrity and just getting into blogging, that probably won't be the case. Getting your blog to grow is going to take time and effort. Be patient, put out awesome content, and the followers will come. I promise.

Mistake #8: Not Joining Affiliate Programs

If you want to turn your blog into a business, why not start by generating some passive income from it? Join some simple affiliate programs from the get-go just to get you started. Amazon Affiliates is a great place to start (every time you recommend an Amazon product and back-link it with your code, you make a commission if someone buys it). Share-A-Sale and Commission Junction are other ones. The list really goes on and on! Point being: join some kind of affiliate program to at least get you started.

Mistake #9: Not Being True to Yourself

You know what stands out amongst a sea of Internet content? Authenticity. Authenticity always wins over anything else. People can easily sniff out the garbage or imposters, so make sure you're being true to yourself and putting out content that is honest and really makes you happy. Don't post about things you "think your audience would like." Nah, post about the stuff that really matters to you.

Being true to yourself is the most important thing and it will attract the genuine followers. The minute I started writing as if I was chatting it up with my best friend was the minute my blog started taking off. Let your personality and voice shine through (*kudos to John Romaniello for giving me this incredible tip of advice). People notice and appreciate it.

Mistake #10: Not Providing Value or Creating Trust With Your Audience

Do you know why someone would choose to come back to a blog again and again and again? It's because that blog continuously provides a tremendous amount of value that people can't wait to consume. Are you doing this in your business? What are you doing right now to provide value and create trust amongst your audience?  Do you have amazing *FREE* content that they can come and consume time and time again?

The secret to being a successful blogger is to create and establish a trusting relationship with your audience. Once your audience trusts the stuff you're putting out and you've created a ton of value, they are more likely to buy into the stuff or services you have to offer. Provide value, create trust, and repeat. Once you do this enough, you'll have a loyal following behind you that is eager to consume and promote your content for you.

How to Save Money During Travel and Spend Less Than $50 Per Day

How good at saving money during travel are you? Can you spend less than $50 per day? Less than $30? Check out these tips that will help you save money during travel so that you never have to hit the ATM during your trip. Because let's face it: the ATM is a buzzkill.

How to Save Money During Travel and Spend Less Than $50 Per Day

Raise your hand if you like to save money during travel... *TWO HANDS GO UP* If you're like me, you want the money to go as far as it can and never have to look at your bank account or go to the ATM while you're traveling. It's such a buzzkill!

I'm alllll about saving money during travel and I want to help you do the same. As a frequent traveler, I've come up with a few ways that you can make sure your travel budget goes as far as possible so that you never have to hit the ATM for extra cash (unless you really want to). Let's jump right in!

Start With This Formula to Plan Your Budget

In order to save money during travel, you have to have a target budget in mind so you can keep yourself on track. Start with this formula to plan how much you'll want to put aside:

Airfare & Transportation + Accommodations + Daily Allowance = TRAVEL BUDGET

  • Calculate your airfare and average transportation costs first. Try to find cheap flights (check this post for tips), plan out how to get to/from the airport (public transit, taxi, or rental), and how you'll be getting around every day (public transit, taxi, walking, or rental). Public transit will always be the cheapest option for getting around in a city, and you basically get to live how the locals live!
  • Calculate your accommodations next. You can save money by staying with a friend, Airbnb, or Couchsurfing
  • Last, give yourself a daily allowance. Are you going to spend $20, $50, or $100 per day? It's actually not that hard to only budget $30-50 per day anywhere in the world (check this post for the Top 12 Cheapest Destinations that cost < $50 per day). Sometimes I even manage to spend less than that! You just need to know when to save and when to spend.

Now that you've got your budget, I'll show you ways to save on your daily allowance! I've gotten really good at spending only $15-30 per day sometimes on my allowance, so it is possible.

1. Use Cash

You know what sucks? Seeing cash leave your hands. It sucks a lot. There's some sort of mental trigger that happens whenever we fork up the money to physically hand over to someone. When you see the money actually leave your hands it's much worse than swiping a credit or debit card. Amirite?!

To save on your daily allowance, consider using cash only (or mostly cash) in order to be conscious of what you're spending. It allows you to have the exact amount of money you're willing to spend and ensure that you don't go over budget.

2. Take Advantage of FREE Stuff

Who doesn't love free stuff?! I freakin' LOVE free stuff! There are so many ways to take advantage of free things while you're traveling to make sure you stay on budget. Here are some tips:

  • Check to see if your hotel or Airbnb offer breakfast or appetizers for free. Most places do, you just need to take advantage of it! *I'll even snag a few apples, snacks, or whatever else for later in my room so I can snack when I'm hungry!
  • Check to see if your accommodation provides free shuttle transportation to/from the airport to help you save on transportation costs
  • See if any museums or attractions you want to visit offer free (or discounted) admission days. A lot of major museums offer at least 1 "deal" day. All you need to do is check their website!
  • Look for free events happening around town during your visit. So many cities often have free street festivals, concerts, or events going on throughout the year. You can check Thrillist, Timeout, or other similar websites to see if there is anything worth attending.

3. Go to the Local Market or Grocery Shop

You can save a boat load of money on food just by shopping at the local market or grocery store for basic needs. As soon as you arrive to your destination, find a local market where you can buy fruit, veggies, and other snacks to have during your trip. You can also hit up the grocery store's deli to get less expensive meals or snacks.

I also love buying simple stuff for sandwiches or salads (especially if there is a fridge in my room) so I can make easy meals during my stay. Imagine: You'll be saving $10-25 per meal just by doing this! Using this tip will help cut back your food costs by a lotttt.

PRO TIP: Are you heading to Disney, Universal Studios, or another theme park that allows you to bring food into the park? Pack your lunch before you go! You'll save SO MUCH by doing this! Rent a locker when you arrive and store your lunch box in there. I do this all the time!

4. Walk Everywhere

In my opinion, the best way to get to know a new city is by walking. Walk everywhere you can! Skip the cabs, trains, or buses and take a walk. You'll probably stumble upon something you wouldn't have seen from the inside of a taxi. Plus it's FREE!

5. Bring A Water Bottle

Tip #1 of traveling is to always stay hydrated. But don't waste your money on buying tons of water when you arrive (or even when you get to the airport). Always bring an empty water bottle with you to refill and reuse. As a professional traveler, I recommend these 2 types of water bottles for very specific reasons:

1) SmartWater - You're probably asking, "Why? Why would I use SmartWater over any other regular bottle of water?" And no, this isn't a plug or a sponsored mention at all. I choose it FOR THE BOTTLE ITSELF--that's why! Have you ever traveled with a bottle of Ice Mountain or any other brand of plastic water bottle? They crinkle up in like 2 seconds! It drives me nuts! You throw it in your bag, it crinkles instantly...and then you can't fill it up properly anymore, there are too many crinkles in the bottle, it's a mess. With SmartWater, the bottles don't crinkle as easily and you'll always get the exact amount of water you want. See? There's a method to the madness!

2) A Water Bottle With an Integrated Filter - I freaking love how technology is advancing daily conveniences for us. There are water bottles with integrated filters in them now so that you can ensure all the water you drink will be purified and rid of toxins. I personally love LifeStraw's Go Water Bottle (and no, this isn't a plug. I legit love it) because of their filter system and quality bottle. You can literally get water from a pond and it will filter it for you! How cool?!

6. Eat Tapas Style

Another dining tip: try to eat "tapas style" wherever you go. So I don't necessarily mean only go to Tapas style places (although I could totally get down with that). I mean opt for appetizers instead of expensive entrees, share your plates, and cut back on your portions. Maybe you can try 2-3 appetizers for less than or equal to the price of 1 entree. It's definitely worth looking into!

7. Avoid Tourist Traps

Did you know that restaurants near tourist sites tend to be twice as expensive and half as good? These places know that tourists probably don't know any better and will rip people off by offering cheap quality goods at high prices. Avoid tourist traps by searching out great local places to eat and things to do.

Sure, you can still go see and do the touristy things (hell, I even love doing that every once in awhile), but don't get sucked into the traps surround the sites. Use the 6-block rule, Yelp, or Google to find other places to eat. Hint: If there are pictures of the food on the menu, you might want to think twice...

8. Use Public Transit

Public transit is the cheapest and one of the best ways to get around any city. You're paying way less than a cab or rental, and you get to see the city how locals see it! Google Maps makes it easier than ever to map out a route to your destination, so take advantage of this! You can get by with spending $2-10 per day by utilizing public transit wherever you go. I freaking love it.

9. Skip the Booze

Alright, so I know I'm going to lose some of you on this one...but hear me out! Alcohol is the biggest rip off and money suck when you're traveling. Trust me, I love a nice, well-deserved cocktail at the end of the day, just like any other person; but you will save SO MUCH money by skipping the booze when you travel.

Most places charge $10-20 per drink now, which can make a huge dent in your daily allowance very quickly. And what's the purpose? To feel a slight buzz (or maybe not even that if it's a shitty drink)? Why not spend that money on experiences or things that will help you create memories from your travels?

The Only Exceptions: (1) Obviously, if you're celebrating something and you want to have a drink, do it. Try to set a limit or budget before you start. (2) Take advantage of Happy Hours! HH is a great way to save on having drinks. (3) Buy alcohol from the liquor store or grocery store to save on the markup costs. You can make your own bevvies in the room at a much cheaper cost.

10. Search Out the Deals

If you haven't caught on already, I'm all about finding the deals. There are always deals to seek out when you travel! Restaurant specials, hotel deals, happy hours, museum discounts, etc. are always going on! Check out Groupon or Living Social, ask the concierge, ask people on social media, or even do a simple Google search for great deals happening around you. There are always special things to be found and ways to save money by just setting the intention to seek them out.

How to Prepare for the New Instagram Algorithm

Instagram is shaking things up and changing the algorithm to favor engagement. Don't panic just yet. Adjust and adapt! Here are 4 steps to prepare for the "New Instagram" as it rolls out to make sure you don't get lost in the shuffle.

How to Prepare for the New Instagram Algorithm

Did you hear the news?! Instagram announced it is rolling out a new algorithm and it's all about engagement! Everything is going to be different! EVERYONE PANIC!!!

Ok... Seriously... Don't panic.

Change is the only constant in life, so we shouldn't be surprised that this is happening. When the announcement was made a couple months ago, everyone got all up in arms that Instagram was losing its cool, messing things up, and even becoming irrelevant. Trust me: the change didn't make me happy either; but I learned that if I wanted to keep using IG (which I love and heavily rely on for my business), I would have to learn to adapt and prepare for what's coming.

At the end of the day, Instagram is a business. If they want to change things up, we just have to suck it up, adapt, and move on. Do I like all the (sometimes horrible) changes some social media platforms have made over the years? HELLLLL NO! But I learn and find ways to modify what I'm currently doing in order to be successful for what is to come. That's our job as entrepreneurs!

It's like all the times Facebook has changed things up on us (Why, FB?! Whyyy?). We all effing hate it, but we adjust and proceed. Well, it's time to adjust and proceed, everyone! The New Instagram Algorithm is here and we might as well do what we can to prepare for it. Here are 4 steps you can use to prepare for the "New Instagram."

Step 1: Rebuild Your Foundation

The new IG is all about engagement, right? Well, here's the secret... None of that matters if you're not starting out with a solid foundation to begin with. So the first step is to rebuild your foundation. What do I mean by that? Assess what the heck you're doing with your profile and make sure it is top level.

Check out this post with steps to creating an unforgettable profile, or just see the abridged version here:

  1. Have an easy-to-find name: Instagram's search capabilities are a lot stronger than we think, so make sure your name is easy to read, easy to find, and easy to type. No crazy characters, emojis, or other jumbled up things like using the number 0 instead of the letter O.
  2. Use a killer profile picture: This is what everyone will see as a representation of you whenever they open up Instagram. Make it professional, have your face in it, and be cohesive with the rest of your content.
  3. Create an informational bio: Your bio is like your welcome mat, so make sure you provide good-to-know information in there so people know what you're all about and what to expect from your profile. ALWAYS include a URL or call to action!
  4. Develop an AMAZING cover story: Make sure your photos are cohesive with your theme, you're using the same editing techniques, and you're not straying off topic. You can read more about how to create a stellar cover story here in this post.

Step 2: Optimize Your Posts

If you want people to engage with your content, you need to give them something to talk about. There are millions of people around the world uploading content to Instagram every day, so how are you standing out? Are you doing simple things within your posts to encourage and enhance engagement? Optimize your posts with everything you can in order to get people talking!

Confused on how to make that happen? Here you go:

  1. Have f'ing awesome content: If you're not putting out stellar content, why would someone want to engage with you? Make sure you are posting consistent and cohesive content that your audience will enjoy. Evoke emotions whenever possible, or use simple photography techniques like the rule of thirds. Try out new angles of things that people have never seen before.
  2. Carefully craft your captions: Successful captions get user engagement, so don't overlook your captions! Guide the people into doing what you want them to do. Throw in things or calls to action like "comment below," "tag a friend," "click the link in my bio," or "like this pic" to encourage engagement. Don't have your caption be an afterthought! Use it to your advantage.
  3. Use targeted add-ons: In my lingo, targeted add-ons are anything that you can add on to the post that doesn't actually include the picture/video itself. Hashtags, geotags, @ mentions, tagging someone in the photo, sharing to other social platforms, etc. It increases your exposure and gets more eyeballs on your content, which is obvi what you want at the end of the day. Use them, and use them often. FYI: Just using 1 hashtag can increase your engagement 12.6%!
  4. BE CONSISTENT: Listen up! If you only take away 1 thing from this blog post, let it be this. Be. Consistent. Consistency is the key to success. Use the same editing techniques, the same style of photos, and don't stray away from your niche. If you're a food blogger, stick to food blogging content. Don't confuse your audience. ABC: Always be consistent.

Step 3: Take the First Step to Engagement

Did you know that you hold the key to increasing your engagement in your hands? I'm dead serious. A lot of people think that Instagram is all about sitting back and waiting for other people to engage with the awesome content that they are putting out, but really it starts with you. You can't just sit back and wait for people to come and discover your profile. You need to start being proactive about engaging with others in order to get your name out there.

Think of Instagram like a giant networking event. You wouldn't sit back and wait for people to come to you. You get out of your comfort zone and meet others first! Here are some ways to jumpstart your engagement:

  1. People within your reach: Whether you're an established entrepreneur or just starting out, you already have people within reach that you can start to engage with on Instagram. Do your clients, Facebook friends, or other social media followers know where to find you on IG? Make it apparent. Start by letting them know that the party is over on IG and connect with people who are easy to access--aka get the low hanging fruit.
  2. Accounts in your niche: This is where people don't want to put in the work to see results. You have to put yourself out there first in order to get the people to come back to you. Find accounts in your niche--whether that is through FB groups, hashtags, the Explore tab, geotags, or other forms of searching--and get involved with them. Like their stuff, comment on their pics, follow them, etc. Take some time to give support to others and they will return the favor to you!
  3. Your IG audience: What are you doing to maintain the trust and engagement of your current followers? Reward the people who already follow you by showing them that you appreciate the support. Comment back to their comments on your content, like their content, follow them, do a shout out and repost their stuff, etc. Share the love and keep them engaged!
  4. Practice Daily Habits: None of these things are a one-and-done deal. You have to practice good daily habits every day in order to see results with engagement. Read more about the daily habits you should keep on this post.

Step 4: Don't Give Up On Instagram!

A lot of hearts were breaking across the world when Instagram announced the new algorithm, myself included. I don't think the feed should change at all, but we can't give up on Instagram just because we are frustrated with it! All we need to do is adapt and readjust. I promise we'll all get through this together and come out the other end successful. If you take these steps, you're definitely heading in the right direction to prepare for the New Instagram.

Where to Stay in Big Sur: Glen Oaks Big Sur

Last Stop of the California Road Trip: Big Sur! Are you traveling to Big Sur too? Check in to Glen Oaks Big Sur, where you'll be able to choose between luxurious comforts with a side of nature or immersive glamping in the heart of the forest.

A Weekend at Glen Oaks Big Sur: A Luxurious Haven in the Heart of Big Sur

You've seen pictures of Big Sur, California, haven't you? The stunning pictures of those deep blue waters from the Pacific Ocean that come crashing onto a shoreline filled with magnificent, towering rocks... Or maybe you've seen the pictures of those endless coastline views that seem to be more and more breathtaking with every turn you make. Yeah, I've been seeing those pictures for so long that I had developed serious travel envy. I needed to get to Big Sur, stat.

After spending some time in the Santa Barbara area, it was time for Jay and I to continue our journey north. We grabbed our hiking shoes, our cameras, and our chicest "Big City-meets-Big Sur" outfits (ok, maybe that was just me...) and headed up Highway 1 to get a look at the enchanting Big Sur area for ourselves. And since I'm a big believer that where you stay can make or break your travel experience, I knew that we had to stay somewhere amazing to make our Big Sur adventure magical.

I was sort of into the idea of staying somewhere "outdoorsy" since I'm constantly surrounded by urban structures, but I still wanted the comforts of modern living (you can take the girl out of the city, but you can't take the city out of the girl). I spotted Glen Oaks Big Sur on a list that premiered the most romantic outdoor getaways in the United States and was immediately hooked in. The luxurious, newly remodeled guest cabins and lodges, the lush and pristine Redwood Grove, the on-site restaurant, and the ideal location in the heart of Big Sur all sold me on this perfect glamping getaway.

Arriving to this Natural Hideaway

Getting to Glen Oaks Big Sur is really half the fun of staying here! You'll be coming from either north or south on Highway 1 and encounter so many incredible opportunities to stop, pull over, and soak in the majestic views. You could see the beautiful, secluded McWay Falls, the legendary Bixby Bridge, and the miles and miles of incredible, untouched beauty around the California coastline. *Since check-in doesn't start until the afternoon, I'd recommend leaving with ample time in the morning to be able to stop and enjoy the views as many times as you want.

We drove up north on Highway 1, which gave for a longer, more scenic route into Glen Oaks Big Sur. We probably stopped along PCH at least a dozen times before arriving at the lodge. When you take this route, you can stop and see the "Portal to Big Sur" at Ragged Point Inn & Resort, the McWay Falls at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, the purple sand beaches at Pfeiffer Beach, countless hiking trails and stunning views, and all of the adorable, local restaurants, like Big Sur Roadhouse. The entire road trip kept building up our anticipation to arrive at Glen Oaks!

Choosing Your Experience

After spending the day exploring Big Sur, we were finally ready to check into our room at the lodge. What I love about this property is that it is comprised of multiple fireside motor lodges and numerous single and multi-room cabins, all of which are newly renovated and remodeled. These separate options allow you to choose the exact type of experience you want to have during your stay: either "immersive glamping in the forest" or "comfortable luxury with a side of nature."

The upscale cabins are all in the heart of a Redwood Grove, which makes for a perfect, quiet nature experience. The stately fireside motor lodges are a little bit more suitable for those who want the beauty of nature with a little more modern, luxury comfort. Since it was our first time staying in an outdoor getaway like this, we opted for the Adobe King Fireside Lodge because we wanted that comfortable luxury with a side of nature experience. It was perfect for my "Big City-meets-Big Sur" mentality :)

Luxury Comfort Meets Rustic-Chic

Entering our elegant fireside lodge was such an unforgettable experience. After we pulled up to the property, we got out of the car and followed a path around high fences covered in fresh Jasmine that danced alongside the towering trees. We opened the gate to our lodge and were greeted by a lovely, private outdoor patio that came with a two-way gas fireplace, which was visible from the outside and interior of our room.

Our King guest room was beautifully decorated in a rustic/retro style with a modern twist. The room had bright, colorful decor, gorgeous wood furnishings, fun activities to keep you busy (like yoga mats, board games, and a Buddha Board), and even a complimentary s'mores kit! The bed and pillows were a fabulous highlight of their own... I think I fell asleep within 2 seconds of putting my head down on that pile of plush pillows.

However, my favorite part of the whole room (and probably the thing that I was most excited about) was the bathroom. The glamorous bathroom came with heated floors, modern fixtures, and a large, two-person shower with stone flooring. I wanted to cut this room out of the lodge and take it home with me!

How to Spend Your Time Here

After exploring Big Sur all day, it's nice to know that you have stylish comforts to come home to at Glen Oaks Big Sur. However, the homey lodge is much more than just a place to sleep. There is plenty to experience right outside your front door around the property!

Here are some things I would recommend doing during you stay at Glen Oaks Big Sur:

  • Walk to the Big Sur River

The Big Sur River is located near all of the cabins on the west side of the property. Follow the paths down to the river and enjoy the soothing sounds of the water. If it's warm enough, you can even go in the water for a quick, refreshing dip!

  • Meander through the Redwood Grove (and see Grandmother Pfeiffer!)

Along the path to the Big Sur River is a stunning Redwood Grove that boasts some of the oldest and largest Redwoods in the area. Make sure you stop and see Grandmother Pfeiffer, which is the second-largest Redwood in all of Big Sur. She is truly magnificent!

  • Take a hike around the property

You can walk around the property to enjoy all of the natural beauty that surrounds it, or even ask about some of the nearby trails to continue your journey further into Big Sur.

  • Enjoy the communal campfire

Every night around sundown, Glen Oaks Big Sur hosts a private campfire for their guests at the communal campfire site until 10pm. Bring your s'mores supplies (and maybe a glass of wine), ask the front desk for some skewers, and enjoy!

  • Stop in at Big Sur Roadhouse for breakfast

The Big Sur Roadhouse, which is currently undergoing a wonderful redecorating process, is a great spot for Glen Oaks guests to stop in for breakfast. They provide complimentary donuts and coffee for guests, as well as an assortment of other small breakfast items. Once the redecorating is complete this year, they will also be serving a full menu with other meal options. The restaurant is so chic and decorated with a variety of unique and hand-made furnishings. It's a must-see!

  • Chill out in your private outdoor patio

The best part of staying in our guest room was having the private outdoor patio to enjoy at our leisure. You can come out and enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning, a glass of wine in the evening, or just relax out there with a book or your Buddha Board! I loved that our room had the dual two-way gas fireplace because we were able to turn it on and enjoy it from both the inside and the outside.

Good to Know Information

  • All of the accommodations at Glen Oaks Big Sur are undergoing an exciting redecorating project to allow for more luxurious comforts throughout the property.

  • There are no televisions in the rooms to allow for a full nature immersion experience.

  • There is no cell phone service in Big Sur, but you will have Wi-Fi access in your cabin or lodge.

  • Coffee and beverages are always available in the front office, as well as across the street at Big Sur Roadhouse. Make sure you pick up a maple donut for breakfast there too! I promise you will be licking your fingers after you eat it... It's that good.

  • Parking is available on-site near your accommodation.

  • There is a general store next to the front office in case you need groceries, supplies, or anything you might have forgotten at home.

Staying at Glen Oaks Big Sur really made our Big Sur experience so wonderful! It was perfectly located for what we wanted to see and do, the staff was incredibly friendly, the prices were very affordable for the area, and the accommodations were the excellent combination of "comfortable luxury with a side of nature." We will definitely return to Glen Oaks Big Sur the next time we visit!
