Locals Only: 6 Reasons Why Locals Are the Best Travel Guides
Wouldn't it be great to be a local everywhere you went? Now it's possible to connect with locals wherever you travel to get the best advice. After all, locals know best and here are 6 reasons why.
Locals Only: 6 Reasons Why Locals Are The Best Travel Guides
Wouldn't it be so great if you could be a local everywhere you traveled? You would know the best burger in town, which bartender serves the stiffest drinks, the best thrift shop to score vintage designer duds, or even the prettiest spot in the park... It would be amazing (and not to mention save a ton of time on trip planning)!
Well, even though that's not possible...what if you had a local friend in every city? Someone who shares or understands your interests. Someone you could trust to give you the best advice on where to go and what to see. Someone you could text and get second-by-second updates on what to do next. After all, everyone knows that locals know best! Here are 6 reasons why locals are the best travel guides.
1. You connect with a human being, not automated suggestions
Sure, Yelp and TripAdvisor are great sources to use for traveling; but consulting a local about what the 'real' great things to do are is priceless. How else are you supposed to find that obscure, seedy dive bar in the middle of a *probably* questionable neighborhood if you don't ask a local?!
Using a local as your tour guide is the best option because you get a personalized connection and the opportunity to chat in real-time about suggestions. The world we live in is so driven by technology that it's nice to get back to connecting one-on-one with another person to discover information. It's easy to get overwhelmed with so many automated messages constantly coming at us--especially for travel recommendations.
2. They understand how to match your interests with their recommendations
Juliette Restaurant, Brooklyn, 135 N 5th St
Have you ever been in the mood for something while traveling and can't seem to find exactly what you're looking for? Like, maybe you're trying to find cheap-but-awesome Korean BBQ shrimp tacos at a chill restaurant that serves craft beer...or maybe a cocktail lounge that makes you feel like you've escaped into Alice and Wonderland. If you typed those things into a search engine, you probably wouldn't find what you're looking for.
Locals know these kinds of things. They know exactly the kinds of places that match your interests and will deliver to the best of their knowledge. "I want to walk into a speakeasy that feels like I stepped back in time into The Great Gatsby." "Done." "I want a restaurant/bar that feels like I just got done surfing with my friends in Hawaii." "Got it." "I want a coffee so strong that will keep me up until tomorrow." "Strange, but ok!" Locals will always share the best of what you're looking for.
3. They are flexible with your time and money
Another great thing about connecting with a local one-on-one is that you can be honest with them about your time frame or budget. Whether you only have 2 hours to explore and an unlimited budget or the entire day and you want to only do free things, locals will always give you the top suggestions based on your parameters.
Since they know the lay of the land, they can give you personalized suggestions on what to do or what to skip based on your time and money situation. They can also tell you when to visit certain spots based on their knowledge of the city. Maybe you want to beat rush hour or wait until everyone is busy with lunch. Locals always know these secret little details.
4. They give you the best of the best
Blind Barber, Brooklyn, 524 Lorimer St
When you're visiting somewhere new and getting advice from a local, they typically want to make sure that you walk away from that trip raving about how amazing XYZ location is. It's that hometown pride! They would never want you going around the world bashing the city the live in. You're going to be 'in the know' with a local's tips.
Locals will always give you the best of the best recommendations. You'll get the real inside scoop on where the best burger is, where the best bars are, where the trendiest speakeasy is, etc. It's much more exciting to feel like an insider and get exclusive advice from someone who actually lives there versus finding something with high or decent Yelp reviews.
5. You get a personalized itinerary
Not only are locals great at recommending places to go, see, and eat, but they could also give you a personalized itinerary based on your needs and desires. Whether you prefer specific instructions, loose suggestions, or comprehensive lists to select from, locals will know what to provide you with to really customize your visit.
Maybe you want to spend the entire day exploring their neighborhood and want an exact minute-by-minute itinerary; or maybe you want casual suggestions to pick and choose from throughout the weekend. Either way, locals have that inside knowledge to make sure you're getting everything you want out of the experience.
6. It saves you time from planning
Woops Bakeshop, Brooklyn, 548 Driggs Ave
Probably the best part of consulting a local about what to do in their city is the amount of time it saves you from all the planning. Forget spending hours on TripAdvisor, Pinterest, or travel forums. Save all of that time for something better and just have a local do all the planning for you! After all, they've already experienced it first-hand and know what's best. That aspect alone is priceless.

3 Daily Habits to Increase Your Instagram Engagement
Having a high number of followers means nothing if you don't have the engagement to back it up. Discover 3 simple ways you can increase your Instagram engagement every day.
3 Daily Habits to Increase Your Instagram Engagement
Everyone out there is talking about 'how to grow your Instagram following' and 'how to get more followers fast on Instagram'; but what about the engagement that you have with those followers once you find them? A high number of followers means nothing if you don't have the engagement to back it up.
Brands and sponsors are starting to see that high engagement beats high following, which is great for bloggers, entrepreneurs, or brands who are just starting out or are already established. Work with what you already have and get people excited about your brand so you can continue to grow your business.
Luckily there are little things you can do every day to start boosting those engagement numbers to get more of your community responding. Here are 3 daily habits you can implement to increase your Instagram engagement.
*PS: You can watch my FREE INSTAGRAM TRAINING by clicking RIGHT HERE!
1. Consistently upload amazing content
Possibly the easiest and most important thing for you to do every day on Instagram is consistently upload stellar content. Doing this will do 3 things: It will allow you to continue to build your profile, attract new followers, and keep existing followers.
When potential new followers come to your account for the first time, they will judge your profile in less than 2 seconds to decide if they want to follow you or not. If you are constantly putting out great photos that look consistent (similar color schemes, common themes, same layouts, consistent posting schedule, etc.) it will entice people to hit that "Follow" button. People love consistency, so make sure you stick to it.
On the other side of that, you need to make sure you are uploading interesting photos to keep your current followers engaged as well. Give them the types of photos that made them excited to join your community in the first place. All it takes is 1 bad or annoying photo for people to hit "Unfollow."
If you're stuck on what types of photos receive the best engagement, take cues from the pros (I'm serious!). Look on popular accounts and see what's working for them. It's perfectly fine to seek out inspiration and get ideas for what you want to create. I do this every single day. I'll give you a couple hints: lighter photos outperform darker ones; selfies typically get 38% higher engagement; and popular landmarks and cityscapes typically get very high engagement.
Be consistent. Put out amazing content.
2. Find new accounts to connect with
Image via macrumors.com
People need to think of Instagram like it's a giant networking event. How do you expect to get noticed if you're sitting in the corner by yourself and not getting out into the room and meeting other people? The best way to grow your engagement (and your account) is by finding new accounts to connect with every day.
If you haven't already, figure out what niche your account fits into and then look for other people in your space to connect with. You can do this by searching hashtags, geotags, utilizing the IG Explore tab, or simply doing a Google search (ex: "best travel instagram accounts"). You can even look on your favorite accounts and see who they are following or who their followers are and connect with them.
Once you find these other accounts, be the first to engage with them. Follow them, like their pictures, comment on their pictures, share their pictures, tell them you love their feed, visit their blogs... You get the point. What you are ultimately doing is creating a community of people who have the same interests as you.
After you connect with new accounts every day, you will start to see the growth happening. Those same people who you reached out to will come back to your profile when they see your activity. They might also follow you, like your pictures, comment on your pictures, etc. It is an amazing chain reaction of networking that you can practice each day! Try connecting with a few more accounts each day and see where it gets you.
3. Respond to every comment
Image via greatist.com
Nurturing your existing community is one of the biggest ways to increase your Instagram engagement. Something as simple as responding to comments left by your followers can make a huge difference in the long run.
Responding to comments humanizes you instead of making your followers feel like they are following someone they will never get in touch with. It makes them feel like they are part of the community and that you appreciate their support. There is something so special about a simple "Thanks!" (or any kind of acknowledgment) that makes your followers feel valued and keeps them around.
I understand that as your account grows, responding to every comment could take a lot of time and not be as productive (I sometimes only respond to comments every few days). Luckily there are plenty of other ways to engage with your current followers that don't include responding to comments. You can like their photos in return, feature their photos, leave nice comments on their account, etc. Remember: You're trying to build a community here, so make sure you're tending to it every day.
_____
The ultimate key to making these things successful is consistency.
You will only be able to build a strong and engaged Instagram community if you are consistent with these habits every day.
Put out great content, connect with new people, and engage with your existing followers. It takes a bit of time, but the results will be magnificent!

Free Things to Do in New York City
NYC is expensive, but there are plenty of things to do around here that prove "free" doesn't have to mean "shitty." Check out these free things to do in New York City that help you stay active and explore culture.
Free Things to Do in New York City: 5 Ways to Be Active & 5 Ways to Explore Culture
New York City is expensive. Like, really expensive. A great cocktail starts at $15, dinner for two can easily be $100, taxis are almost $4 before you even move the car, and I'm not even going to get started on the cost of real estate...
It's easy to see your hard-earned money go quickly down the drain in New York City, so finding things to do for free (or on the reallll cheap) is so helpful to make sure this city doesn't suck you dry. Luckily I've been able to find some amazing things to do here that prove "free" doesn't have to mean "shitty." Here are some tips for free things to do in New York City in order to be active and explore culture.
5 Ways to Be Active:
1. Yoga To The People
This is hands down my favorite thing on this post. Yoga To The People is an amazing yoga studio (with multiple locations throughout the city) that offers free/affordable yoga classes to the masses. It is donation based, so you can pay what you are comfortable paying. And if you don't have a yoga mat, you can rent one for just $2. The classes are really, really good and very popular amongst New Yorkers. Go channel your inner yogi now!
2. Walk the High Line
The High Line is a beautiful, old, elevated railroad track that has been turned into an outdoor park/walkway for pedestrians. It connects the Meatpacking District, Chelsea, and bits of Hell's Kitchen all by this one stretch of track. You'll get amazing views of the city, the river, and even New Jersey by walking through the High Line. It's really great to come when it's nice and sunny out too.
3. Walk, bike, or skate across the Brooklyn Bridge
There's no better way to get stunning cityscape views of Manhattan and Brooklyn than by crossing the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. Marvel at this architectural beauty while walking, biking, or skating 1.134 miles to cross it one-way. You'll definitely want to stop for pictures if you haven't already because it's too pretty not to oogle at the views from here.
4. Pick a neighborhood and walk around
Picking a neighborhood to get lost in and explore is a wonderful way to stay active and get to know the city better. My boyfriend and I love doing this on our days off together. We just pick a place that we want to get a deeper look at and spend the day wandering the streets. It's a fun way to walk a few miles on any afternoon.
5. Go Kayaking on the Hudson
If you're into kayaking, try out the free tours that you can take at the Downtown Boathouse. This company offers free tours and classes throughout the week when the weather is warmer. Services usually open up around April of every year.
Also try: Free ice skating or yoga in Bryant Park, biking around the city, or free yoga in Times Square in the summer.
5 Way to Explore Culture:
1. Visit Museums, Zoos, or Gardens
Many tourists aren't privy to the fact that NYC museums can actually be free to get into. There are tons of wonderful places that are either donation based or offer free nights to visit. Here are some great spots to check out:

Socrates Sculpture Park: Free all the time (light shows & movies on Wednesdays in the summer)
Whitney Museum of American Art: Free from 7-9:30 on Fridays
9/11 Memorial Museum: Free from 5-8pm on Tuesdays
2. Hang in Parks
New York has plenty of parks to love throughout the city. Central Park, Bryant Park, Riverside Park, Battery Park, Madison Square Park, Washington Square Park, and the list goes on and on. Take a picnic and hang out in one of the many parks, see Shakespeare in the Park in Central Park, or catch a movie on the Astoria Park Great Lawn. All for free, and all for your enjoyment!
3. Take a Brooklyn Brewery Tour
The Brooklyn Brewery has been gaining more and more notoriety over the last few years, and hosting free tours every week has been a vital role in growing their presence in the community. Stop by the Brooklyn Brewery for a free tour every weekend to see how your favorite NYC beer is made. Tours are free from 1-5pm on Saturdays and 1-4pm on Sundays.
4. Sightsee in Midtown
There are so many modern and iconic beauties to love in Midtown. You can do any of the following things for free around this neighborhood:
Visit the New York Public Library
Walk through Grand Central Station to see the architecture
See Rockefeller Center (and the Christmas tree/lights on 5th Avenue during the holidays)
Take in the energy at Times Square
Visit St. Patrick's Cathedral
See the Empire State Building
See the Chrysler Building
5. Go to TV show tapings
Did you know that a lot of your favorite TV show tapings are actually free to attend? Yep! Jimmy Fallon, Kelly & Michael, The Today Show, and so many more! All you have to do is either show up or reserve your tickets ahead of time and get there early. Here is a list of shows that are currently offering free tickets to studio audiences.
Also try: Seeing the art in the Chelsea galleries, visiting Governor's Island, taking a tour at the Federal Reserve, or calling ahead at Juilliard to score free tickets to performances.

This year's summit is taking place on March 18-20, 2016, in sunny Southern California. If you're on the fence, or just don't know a lot about it, here are 8 reasons why you can't miss out on WITS 2016!
1. Escape to SoCal for the weekend
The winter blues are in full swing right now, and there is really nothing better than escaping to a warm destination to feel good again. This year's conference is being held at the Hotel Irvine in Irvine, California. Orange County, beaches, shopping, and sunshine in the winter sounds good to me!
Irvine is booming right now and has so much to offer in addition to being super close to hot spots like Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, La Jolla, San Diego, and more! It is also just a quick drive from LAX airport in case you were hoping to hang around Los Angeles before or after the conference.
2. Meet other women who share your passion
Image via WITS
The thing I love most about WITS is that it brings together incredible women from all over the world who all have 1 thing in common: their love for travel. You'll be able to meet bloggers, fellow travelers, entrepreneurs, and industry professionals. There's something even more special about it being all women though. Like we are all here to support and connect with each other :)
I seriously can't emphasize enough how amazing of a community it is. I have formed and bonded long-term friendships with many of the women I met and mingled with at every WITS. Everyone I've met has been very genuine and there to have a great time!
3. Free tours and activities
If you've never been to a travel conference or summit, one of the best perks is the free goodies. You will have the opportunity to go on exclusive tours and excursions before and after the conference all in exchange for doing what you do best: Sharing your experiences with others!
This year there will be opportunities to see many parts of Southern California including Newport Beach, Irvine, Laguna Beach, and many more. A full list of activities will be available before the conference for everyone who is registered.
4. A chance to Market yourself or your business
Image via WITS
If you're an entrepreneur, blogger, or business owner, think of WITS as a weekend vacation, with a giant networking party, where you will also learn a lot. It is the perfect opportunity for you to meet and mingle with other people in order to market yourself or your business.
Last year, there were women who were writing books, launching blogs, or starting partnerships and they were able to network with the women there and share their endeavors. It is a great place to start and grow business relationships for whatever you are currently working on. Make sure you don't forget your business cards!
5. Learn amazing and diverse content
Image via WITS
At the core of it, WITS is a conference for people to come and learn from other like-minded individuals. What I love most about the content at WITS is how organized it is. The content is always really great and consistent. It's cool to listen to the different speakers too, and there's a chance you might recognize some of them too!
There are typically 3 main categories (or "tracks" as they call them) that you can choose from: Entrepreneur, Blogger, and Traveler. Throughout the weekend, there are sessions going on in each of these categories. You can mix and match which ones you attend and get a taste of each of them (this is my preferred method), or you can stick to one for the whole weekend and learn as much as you can within that category.
6. Meet Industry Reps Face-to-Face
Image via WITS
In addition to attracting bloggers, entrepreneurs, and travelers alike, WITS is also a great place to meet Travel Industry Reps. Whether they are representatives from tourism boards, airlines, product lines, or anything else, it is a prime opportunity for you to network and meet these people to get your name out. You can learn first hand what these companies are looking for in terms of partnerships or freelance opportunities.
Last year at WITS, I had the pleasure of meeting a representative from the Quebec City CVB and she taught me so much about how to break into the industry as a new blogger. She shared a lot of do's and don'ts of the industry, which helped me start new partnerships with companies that I worked with after.
7. You could get jobs because of it
Piggy-backing off of my last point, when you meet industry reps and other people at this massive networking event, there is a good chance you could get an awesome business opportunity because of it. All you have to do is put in the effort of networking a little bit and knowing when you can offer your expertise to people who need it. It is a perfect return on your investment!
Just because I simply attended WITS last year, I got a sponsored press trip to Quebec City, I was invited to join the WITS Planning Team, and I got my blog recognized by a few big-name brands. One of my friends met a business coach who helped her write a book, and another friend got to start new brand sponsorships with companies she met there. There are seriously so many great opportunities that can come out of this event that it is ridiculous not to go.
8. Parties!
Last, but certainly not least, are all the fun parties you will get to attend when you come to WITS. Maybe I'm a little biased because I'm a leader on the Events Committee, but take that as a hint that we've got something special up our sleeves for you. All of the events this year are going to be really exciting and come with plenty of food, activities, beverages (maybe some of the adult kind?!?!), and goodies!
So there you have it! 8 reasons why you can't miss out on the Women In Travel Summit this year. Are you ready to join me in California this March 18-20?!
AND GUESS WHAT? I have a special discount code for you to get 10% off your ticket right now too. Just use the code "anawits" when you check out!

How to Make Economy Feel Like First Class
If you can't dish out the dollars for opulence every time, you can still do a few things to feel luxurious while flying. Here are 9 ways to make Economy feel like First Class.
How to Make Economy Feel Like First Class
Champagne cocktails, seats that recline into beds, over-the-top in-flight entertainment, gourmet food... In a perfect world, everything would be as luxurious as it is in First Class. Amirite?! But alas, that's not the world we live in and only a select few are lucky enough to enjoy the comforts of Premiere Class all the time.
Even if you can't dish out the dollars to get that opulence every time, it is still possible to get that First Class feeling on an Economy budget. With a few adjustments and add-ons to your normal travel routine, you can give yourself a royal treatment to feel like you've paid the big bucks for airline comfort. Here are 9 ways to make Economy feel like First Class!
1. Choose your airline and seat wisely
When choosing your airline, make sure you know what is offered with your in-flight service. Some airlines offer complimentary drinks, food, and entertainment, while others make you pay for it. If you're traveling on a 5+ hour flight, this is especially important to know.
Choosing your seat can be a simple luxury for you to take advantage of with any flight. Using sites like Seat Guru will help you decide the best seat for your particular flight. It also helps to know which airlines offer more seat and leg room to give you maximum comfort.
2. Dress the part
Have you ever tried dressing up when you're not feeling amazing? There is something that psychologically happens when you put yourself together and look the part. You instantly feel like you really embody that classy person you're trying to be. So why not do it on the airplane too?
Ditch the ugly pajama pants for a classy but comfortable look. You could even bring additional shirts or underwear to change into so you feel fresh when you land. My favorite items for long haul flights are:
- Comfy black jeans or nice looking black leggings (easily move around or cross your legs)
- A white or black *solid color* tank top (layers are key & especially having a tank underneath it all)
- A nice blazer, sweater, cardigan, or shawl (again, layers!)
- A scarf (doubles as a blanket and/or pillow if you need)
- Super plush socks (makes your feet feel like they're wearing slippers)
- A hat & sunglasses (kind of makes you feel A-List while you're trying to conceal the light)
- Solid color ballet flats or sneakers (makes you look classy and it's comfortable)
3. Plan your meals
I don't know what the deal with airline food is. Very few airlines actually have decent meal choices in Economy, and most of the ones that do are carriers that aren't based in the United States (but that's a whole other rant...). Give yourself the comfort of eating whatever the hell you want by planning your meals ahead.
Cook up a serving of cold noodles in an asian sauce, cut up fresh fruits and veggies, make a kale and quinoa salad, bring some fresh sushi rolls... Whatever you want! Having food that you actually enjoy enhances the experience. And if you don't want to bring a whole meal, A.B.S! Always Bring Snacks :) Pack your favorite specialty snacks to munch on in between meals.

4. Treat yourself
While excessive drinking is the last thing you should do on any flight, it doesn't hurt to treat yourself to a nice glass of champagne or a cold cocktail to make you feel good and relaxed. I love the carry-on cocktail kit that allows you to make your own concoction with the mini bottles provided on the plane.
If drinking alcohol isn't your thing, opt for a nice tea instead--like chamomile, lavender or green--to calm you down before you snooze. Bring your own bags so you can add a bit more comfort from home.
5. Prep your entertainment
Not all airlines offer free in-flight entertainment to coach passengers (thankfully more airlines are starting to though...). Another thing you can do for any flight is prep your entertainment beforehand. Have your iPad, smart phone, or Kindle ready with the latest shows, songs, movies, or books. Buy the newest fashion magazine that makes you feel good. Get that paperback book that you've been dying to read. Whatever your source of entertainment is, do it and prep it ahead of time. You'll be thankful that you had that luxury while flying.
And don't forget to charge everything before you leave! Packing portable chargers to make sure your electronics don't power down is a huge life saver. Always keep those easily accessible in case you need to juice up.
6. Give yourself extra leg room
Extra space is the ultimate perk for traveling in any premiere class. But when you're in Economy, you don't always have that added space. There are 2 ways you can give yourself extra leg room: 1) You can pay for an upgraded seat to the Economy Plus section; or 2) You can strategically pack everything to make sure most of it goes in the overhead compartment, which frees up space underneath the seat in front of you. I might be biased because I'm budget conscious and only 5 ft. 0 in., but I prefer option 2.
You can either check your bag and bring a smaller carry-on to put above you (not my first option because I hate baggage fees), or pack 1 carry-on and fit as much as you can inside and use a very small bag as your personal item. Opt for as small of a bag as possible (I love small leather totes) that only fits the necessities: food, entertainment, electronics, & water. Everything else goes up top.
7. CANCEL THE NOISE
There's nothing like canceling out everything that's going on around you and entering your own personal oasis when you're on a flight. Screaming children, loud passengers, the sounds of the engine. It's too much! Get in your personal heart space by opting for some noise canceling headphones and earplugs. They make all the difference and are worth every penny.
8. Sleep comfortably
Not everyone can easily fall asleep on flights, but you can bring things along that will help you try. Increase your comfort level by bringing a pillow (whether it's your own or a neck pillow), a blanket (or big scarf), an eye mask, or even a seat cushion. I'll even bring a sleep aid from time to time if I really need it.
I rarely use the airline's provided blankets and pillows unless they are sealed before use (you really never know when the last time they washed them was); but if I do, I use them as back supports or seat covers. It helps makes those smaller seats much more tolerable.
9. BRING THE SPA to you
For the ultimate First Class experience, bring along some beauty products that will make you step off the plane looking rested and impossibly fresh looking. Since so many wonderful products come in travel sizes now, splurge a little and get the good stuff. My favorite go-to items are:
- Avene Thermal Water Spray (spray some on your face to refresh your skin)
- Bottled water (seriously hydrate, hydrate, hydrate)
- A good moisturizing mask (let it sink in while you're sleeping)
- Neutrogena Makeup Remover Towelettes
- Batiste Dry Shampoo
- Refreshing, light moisturizer (with SPF is best)
- Quality hand lotion
- Deodorant (no one likes a smelly passenger)
- Toothbrush & Toothpaste
- Natural oils (lavender, peppermint, tea tree, or eucalyptus are best)
- NARS Travel Bronzer/Blush Duo

How to Travel the World Without Spending a Dime
If you're looking for an international experience but don't have the cash to splurge on it, then this article is for you. Discover 12 ways you can travel for free.
How to Travel the World Without Spending a Dime: 12 Ways to Make Your Travel Dreams Happen
So we've talked about traveling the world without spending a fortune, but how about traveling the world without spending a dime?!
Surprisingly it IS possible to travel practically for free! If you really want to do it, there are opportunities; you just have to be willing to take them. If you're looking for an international experience but don't have the cash to splurge on it, then this article is for you.
Here are 12 ways to make your travel dreams come true without spending any money. I've even included a free PDF download with extra tips for you at the end!
1. HOUSE-SIT AROUND THE WORLD
We've all heard about babysitting and pet-sitting, but what about housesitting?! Did you know that there are people around the world who are willing to pay you (or exchange a free place to stay) to come and stay in their home while they are away? All you have to do is make sure the house stays in the condition the owners request, and maybe also tend to pets or gardens.
It is a win-win situation for all involved. You get to stay in a fully-furnished home at no cost to you, and the owners get peace of mind that their home is being safely watched over. These gigs can last anywhere from a short period of time (a few weeks) to long periods of time (a few months).
How to get started: There are a number of different websites that connect house sitters to home owners. You will likely have to pay an initial sign-up fee, but consider it an investment for all of the free lodging you will get in return. Seasoned house sitters recommend signing up for multiple sites to increase your chances of getting matched. Check out MindMyHouse, Trusted Housesitters, HouseCarers, or House Sitters America.
2. WORK OVERSEAS
It is possible to exchange simple work for accommodations, food, and transportation. There are plenty of websites and forums to check out for opportunities of easy work opportunities abroad. Also consider approaching hostels, restaurants, or locally owned-businesses for some sort of agreement that you can exchange work (i.e. cleaning or tending to guest services at a hostel) in exchange for something you need.
You could even bartend, become a tour guide, teach yoga (or some sort of activity), or pick up a serving job to make some extra cash to get you by. If you're still looking for ideas, here are 20 examples of jobs and careers that allow you to travel and make cash along the way.
How to get started: Once you know where you're going, start doing some research for places you can approach for work. Global Work & Travel, Alliance Abroad, Work&Travel Company, Workaway.info, Help Exchange, and (in some cases) Craigslist can be good starting points. You can also directly contact hostels or businesses yourself if you prefer that method.
3. COUCHSURF OR CARPOOL
Couchsurfing is a great way to travel the world, immerse yourself in the local culture, and stay with someone who is an expert on the area, all while getting free accommodations. Hosts open up their homes to travelers for free so they can have a place to crash--a couch, air bed, futon, or even real beds. You can have as little or as much interaction with your host as you want.
If you're heading somewhere within driving distance, consider carpooling to save on transportation costs. There are websites and forums that give travelers the opportunity to connect with other travelers who are heading in the same direction. Link up with them and hitch a ride!
How to get started: Visit the Couchsurfing site to set up your profile and start searching for homes. For carpool services, consider looking at eRideShare, Lonely Planet Travel Forums, or BlaBlaCar.
4. PARTICIPATE IN HOME EXCHANGE PROGRAMS
If you've ever seen the movie The Holiday, you know what I'm talking about. With this option, you are able to swap your home with another person's in exchange for free lodging for both of you! Win-win again! Plus, staying in a fully-furnished home usually offers more perks than staying at an over-priced hotel.
How to get started: Check out great sites like HomeExchange, Knok, Intervac, or LoveHomeSwap to get started on finding your perfect home exchange match.
5. WORK ON BOARD
Have you ever considered cruising, sailing, or yachting your way around the world? Why not try it out? Work on board a cruise, yacht, etc. in exchange for free travel. It will be worth the experience, you will get paid, and it will probably allow you to see more places than you would have in a shorter amount of time.
Don't worry if you're not an engineer or captain. There are plenty of jobs on board that include entertainment, hospitality, or maintenance.
How to get started: Consult sites like Crewseekers, or check the job openings on major cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity, etc.
6. TEACH ENGLISH ABROAD
If you have a passion for teaching in addition to your love for travel then consider teaching English abroad. These positions are always in high demand and can be very rewarding if working with students is something you're in to. Most gigs will cover all of your living and travel expenses, and some places will even offer additional funding on top of that!
You'll need a TEFL Certificate first, and then you can start applying to positions wherever you want. Contracts can last from a few months to a few years, so it is a great way to immerse yourself in another country.
How to get started: Get your TEFL Certificate at places like TEFL Online or International TEFL Academy. Most establishments that you get your certification from offer job boards that you can refer to, but you can also consult sites like CIEE, JET Programme, AEON, or ESL Cafe. Make sure you know everything you are receiving with your gig (lodging, transportation, airfare, etc.) before you proceed!
7. AU PAIR
If you love working with kids, become an Au Pair! The Au Pair Program is a cultural exchange program where families will host you--food, lodging, etc.--in return for you caring for their children. There are many families abroad that will pay both long and short-term contracts. Apply for the program and see where the opportunity could take you!
How to get started: Apply to be in the program on websites like AuPair.com. Having a knowledge of more than 1 language can also come in handy for landing awesome gigs, but it's definitely not a necessity.
8. BECOME A TRAVEL BLOGGER
Interested in traveling the world and sharing your experiences on your own platform? Become a Travel Blogger or Vlogger. Skills in photography, writing, and business (yes, business) definitely come in handy if you want to be really successful in this field.
Very successful bloggers can enjoy perks such as free/paid trips, brand sponsorships, complimentary clothes/gifts, and more. Keep in mind though: it's a very small percentage of bloggers who receive these perks and definitely not everyone. But it doesn't hurt to work hard and aim high!
How to get started: See my post on How to Start a Travel Blog in 5 Easy Steps and get your blog going today!
9. FLY FOR FREE
Embrace the art of travel hacking and you can fly for free. Travel hacking is essentially the act of accumulating a ton of rewards points--whether it be from credit cards, frequent flyer programs, contests, etc.--and cashing those in for free flights (or accommodations) around the world. It takes some time to rack up the points, so planning ahead is key for this one.
How to get started: Sign up for any frequent flyer programs with every airline that you fly. You can also sign up for credit cards that offer airline miles in exchange for every dollar spent. If you want to learn more about how to get cheap airfare (particularly without signing up for credit cards), click here.
10. VOLUNTEER
Ever considered volunteering your time in exchange for free accommodations (and sometimes free flights)? You definitely can! With programs like WorkAway, all you have to do is devote a few hours through the week in exchange for free lodging.
You could also join the Peace Corps to get a global experience on someone else's dime. There are a ton of benefits to joining the Peace Corps too besides the good feelings of volunteering. You can get loans deferred, have all of your living and housing expenses paid for, and even have easy access to transitioning into another job when you go home.
How to get started: Visit WorkAway or Rotary for potential international volunteer opportunities. Check out the Peace Corps website for more information on how to join that organization.
11. WORK SEASONALLY AND ESCAPE NORMAL
If you're not committed to staying in one place, consider working seasonally as a camp counselor, a guide, or something else. There are great communities, like Escape Normal, who consist of individuals who want to stay away from the typical 9-5 life and travel the world while working seasonal jobs.
Many jobs will provide food and housing for you, and some may even offer more. It is a perfect opportunity for you to travel seasonally and experience a new way of living. You could be an adventure tour guide in California one season, and guiding kayaking tours in Costa Rica the next.
How to get started: Log onto Escape Normal and see what job opportunities might be available. If you're interested in being a camp counselor, look at websites like CampStaff or CoolWorks for open positions; or do a little research on your own to find camps in countries you're interested in.
12. WWOOF
If you're into farming and agriculture, you can try and join WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) and you will be able to exchange farm work for house and other living expenses. There are programs in many different countries, so all you have to do is choose which one you want to go to.
This is a good option for people who want to have a local experience in a countryside setting. It might be a bit slower paced than the fast city life, but you might have the chance to travel around when you aren't working.
How to get started: Visit the WWOOF website, choose a country you want to visit, and apply! Make sure to read the details of what is included with your trip.
What are other ways that you travel for free or cheap? Comment below with more suggestions!

20 Travel Careers to KEEP Your Job and Travel
We've all heard about how great it is to quit your job and travel; but what if quitting your job just simply isn't a possibility?
Don't worry... You're not doomed to sit behind a desk for the rest of your life (unless you're comfortable with that). There are plenty of other options to stay fully employed while still traveling. Here are 20 travel careers that will allow you to keep your job and still travel.
1. Consultant or Entrepreneur
Do you have a skill or passion that you can create a business around? Do it! When you work for yourself, you are in complete control of when and where you travel or live. The flexibility will allow you to work remote and travel around if you choose. You are also in complete control of how much money you can make!
2. Join a Company That Has International Offices
If you haven't already, consider joining a company that has international offices. Most companies that have a global presence are often lenient to letting you work from other offices as long as you still complete your responsibilities. Just ask your supervisor or Human Resources if you aren't sure.
3. Digital Nomad
Similar to being a consultant or entrepreneur, being a digital nomad allows you to freely work wherever you want in the world. Become a graphic designer, website developer, or anything else that will allow you to take on clients virtually.
4. Travel (or Fashion, Lifestyle, etc.) Blogger or Vlogger
Interested in traveling the world and sharing your experiences on your own platform? Become a Travel Blogger or Vlogger (Video Blogger)! Very successful bloggers can enjoy perks such as free/paid trips, brand sponsorships, complimentary clothes/gifts, and more. Keep in mind though: it's a very small percentage of bloggers who get these perks and definitely not everyone. *Want to start a Travel Blog today? Click HERE!
5. Destination Wedding Photographer
If you're a skilled photographer, consider tapping into the wedding industry by becoming a Destination Wedding Photographer. You will be able to combine 2 passions for the price of 1: travel and photography!
6. Freelance Anything
Become a freelancer and have the opportunity to travel whenever you want. You can be a writer, photographer, designer, or anything else that requires creative services. There are a number of publications and websites who are always looking for freelancers to provide written and visual works. Once you do enough work, you can even charge top dollar!
7. Instructor or Teacher
Teach yoga, scuba, surfing, skiing, or whatever other activities that you are good at! But being an instructor doesn't have to be limited to physical activity. Do you have a skill that people would pay money to learn? Maybe you know how to code, how to scrapbook, or how to shoot videos. You can set up an online course or academy with programs such as Teachable or CourseCraft to virtually teach your skills and get paid for it!
8. Flight Attendant
If you love flying and don't mind being away from home a lot, consider becoming a flight attendant. You'll get to fly around the world while simultaneously being paid for it!
9. Tour Guide
Travel companies are always looking for qualified individuals to become tour guides. Learn everything you can and become an expert on the place you want to guide. If you speak multiple languages, you'll have a leg up from the other candidates too!
10. English Teacher
Go abroad and teach English as a foreign language. Many countries will pay top dollar for native English speakers to come and teach at their schools. Programs such as TEFL.com are a good place to start searching for ways to do this.
11. Au Pair
If you love working with kids, become an Au Pair! The Au Pair Program is a cultural exchange program where families will host you in return for you caring for their children. There are many families abroad that will pay both long and short-term contracts. Apply for the program and see where the opportunity could take you!
12. Work On Board a Cruise Ship or Yacht
Take an adventure aboard the high seas. Join the crew of a cruise ship or yacht and experience life on deck. You'll see places all over the world without having to pay to get there.
13. Camp Counselor
Another option to work with kids: become a camp counselor! There are camps all over the world that require qualified counselors every year. You can stay local or travel abroad to a camp in Europe or Australia. This could be a good option if you're looking for something more temporary.
14. Travel Nurse
If you are an experienced nurse, consider becoming a travel nurse. There are plenty of programs, such as TravelNursing.org, that help connect you to employers who are in need of nurses all over the world.
15. Translator
Put your knowledge of speaking multiple languages to good use and become a translator. Government agencies, travel companies, and other organizations who are looking to become more global are in constant need of great translators. If you have really strong reading, writing, and speaking skills in another language, you should really consider this.
16. Outside Sales Rep
This is how I started traveling so frequently! Become an outside sales representative and literally get paid to travel and see your clients. Try and find an opportunity within your company first. If that isn't an option, then find another company to work for that does offer a good outside sales role. If you're good at sales, those skills are transferable anywhere.
17. Virtual Assistant
Work for other entrepreneurs, start-ups, or business people and become their virtual assistant. VA jobs are on the rise with so many companies looking to cut employee costs wherever possible and hire people who are remote. This is a great opportunity for you to live or travel wherever you want and still be paid for your work!
18. Peace Corps
Join the Peace Corps if you're interested in volunteering while seeing the world. There are a ton of benefits to joining the Peace Corps too besides the good feelings of volunteering. You can get loans deferred, have all of your living and housing expenses paid for, and even have easy access to transitioning into another job when you go home. Check out PeaceCorps.gov for more information.
19. WWOOF
You can be part of WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) and you will be able to exchange farm work for house and other living expenses. This is a good option for people who want to have a local experience in a countryside setting. It might be a bit slower paced than the fast city life, but you might have the chance to travel around when you aren't working.
20. Bartend
Skilled at pouring the drinks all night long? That's definitely something you can take with you when you travel. Due to the job's natural turnover, bartenders are almost always in high demand. Try to find gigs at hotels, lounges, restaurants, bars, clubs, or cafes. If you speak multiple languages, that's even better!

12 Ways to Save Money for Travel
Jumpstart your travel adventures today with these 12 money-saving tips.
12 Ways to Save Money for Travel
Contrary to popular belief, traveling is not as expensive as people think it is. In today's world, it is actually really easy to travel frequently without breaking the bank. With a little bit of prioritizing and budget management, you can be traveling the world in no time!
Confused on where to start? Here are 12 ways to help you save money for travel so you can start your adventures today.
BEFORE YOU TRAVEL
1. Cook at Home
When you're budgeting for travel, consider saving money on food and start cooking at home more often. Buy fresh groceries and save instead of spending your cash at the restaurants. It's healthy and cost effective! WIN-WIN!
2. DIY Beauty Regimens
I love a great spa session just as much as the next girl; but when it's time to cut down on added expenses, I'm not afraid to just do everything myself. Paint your own nails, do a facial/mask at home, or color your own hair.
3. Opt for Public Transit
Anyone who lives in a city knows how quickly taxis or Ubers can drain our bank accounts. Try giving yourself a little more time (and money) and start taking public transit more often.
4. Pack Your Lunch
Instead of spending $10+ every day on lunch, consider making your own lunch at home and bringing it into work. If you are already buying fresh groceries, it will be a healthier option anyways.
5. Use Only Cash
Have you ever had that sad feeling in the pit of your stomach when you pay with cash and you see it leaving your hands? There is something that triggers your mind when you actually visually SEE the cash leaving your wallet. When you pay with credit cards, the cash isn't in front of you, so it isn't as painful. Try to take out cash from the ATM and only use that so you can be visually conscious of what you're spending.
DURING TRAVEL
6. Ask to Stay With a Friend
Utilize those networking skills and ask friends if you can stay with them when traveling! Staying with friends or family is a great way to save money on booking accommodations. Plus, you'll probably get some great local recommendations.
7. Utilize Airbnb, Couchsurfing, or Hostels
To save on accommodations, consider ditching the hotel and go for a more budget-friendly option. Airbnb, Couchsurfing, and hostels are all great alternatives. My personal favorite is Airbnb because you can rent our entire homes for less than the cost of a hotel room! PS-Click HERE for $20 off your first Airbnb stay.
8. Travel Like a Local
Taking public transit is the key to saving on transportation while you are traveling. Taxis add up fast, so head to the metro, hop on the bus, or walk around instead!
9. Buy Groceries
Save money on food costs by shopping at local markets to buy fresh groceries and snacks. You can buy fresh fruit for breakfast, peanuts or veggies for snacks-on-the-go, or even meals to cook for dinner.
10. Use the 6-Block Rule
Try to avoid any restaurant that is within 6 blocks of a tourist site. The food is usually twice as expensive and half as good. Get local recommendations on places to go, or use Yelp or TripAdvisor to find great spots.
11. Take Advantage of Museum Discounts
Many museums offer discounts--and even free admission--on certain days of the week. Check out the museum's website to verify if they offer these special prices. Most museums even offer daily discounts to students, so bring your ID card if you can!
12. Check Living Social or Groupon
If you really want to try some tourist activities, check out the deals on Living Social or Groupon first. These are great websites to find discounted prices on entertainment around the city.

How to Blend in as a New Yorker
Never look like a tourist in New York again. Here are 12 tips to blend in like a local when visiting NYC!
How to Blend in as a New Yorker: 12 Tips to Look Like a Local
They say that after living in New York for 10 years, you can officially call yourself a New Yorker.
But what if you don't have that kind of time?! What if you're just stopping in for a quick trip and you just want to look and feel like a New Yorker? No worries--we've got you covered!
With a little help from some fellow travel bloggers, we've uncovered a few ways for you to look like a local in no time. Here are 12 tips on how to blend in as a New Yorker!
1. When in doubt, wear black
Black is the universal uniform in New York. It goes with everything and it instantly makes you look put together. Plus, it looks chic as hell when it's pulled off correctly. Opt for head-to-toe black (i.e. shirt, bottoms, AND shoes) for the optimal NY-er look.
2. Don't get on an empty subway car
"A crowded subway train pulls into the station, but one car is empty...No matter how tempting it is. Don't get in an empty subway car...unless you're interested in breathing in the foulest stench in creation. Trust me, it's empty for a reason. We're all not smushed into the other cars just so new passengers can grab a seat." -- Jackie from The Globetrotting Teacher
3. Get out of the way
"To blend in, one must basically get out of the way. None of the standing in the middle of the street staring at the fab buildings. Get out of the way. Bit brutal maybe." -- Sarah from The Sarah Story
4. Weekends are for Brunch
Brunch is a New York institution. No calendar week is complete without brunch. From boozy, to classy, to al fresco, to kid-friendly, NYC does brunch right and you cannot miss it. If you can make reservations somewhere, that's great; but be warned that you will probably have to wait on line for the best of the best places. Just don't go to a chain restaurant...
5. Master the art of ordering a bagel
"Learn to master the art of ordering a bagel. Know what you want beforehand, order with confidence, and then get the hell out of the way. Bagels are a very sacred thing in New York and they must be respected (and then appropriately devoured, of course!)" -- Stacy from Adventure Stacy
6. Don't wait for the crosswalk signal
"It is okay to cross the street when there are no cars coming, no need to wait for the signal to change to walk." -- Chanel from Cultural Xplorer
7. Walk with purpose
It is easy to spot the tourists in the city because of how slow and aimlessly they walk. They often walk side-by-side (crowding up the sidewalks) and think the streets of NYC are for leisurely strolls. Nope--not here. Leisurely strolls are for the park, not the sidewalks of this city. Look straight ahead and walk with intention if you want to blend in.
8. Know your food order ASAP
"Always know your order (sandwiches, pizza, bagels, coffee) before you get to the front of the line. And don't order ranch dressing." -- Brittany from Travel Write Away
9. Try not to touch the subway pole with bare hands
"You don't touch the pole in in subways with your bare hands. Instead, wear gloves, or just lean on the doors like a local. ...It's a vector of disease." -- Lance from Travel Addicts
10. Attend free leisure and fitness activities
Despite what most people think, not everything in New York is always expensive. There are actually a ton of amazing *free* things to do throughout the year. Weather permitting, there are free concerts, fitness lessons, and shows in many of the parks around the city. Check out Shakespeare in the Park or do free yoga with Solstice in Times Square. **I'm also a HUGE fan of classes with Yoga to the People. It is a donation based studio, and the classes are fantastic.
11. Use apps to plan ahead
"Know where you're going before you leave. Get Google Maps on your phone and use the transit directions. Even if you have to look at your phone to get directions while walking, do not stop!" -- Eva from Eva Explores
12. Stand here, walk there
"Stand to the right, walk on the left on escalators. No lollygagging." -- Kristin from Souvenir Finder
